Win streak snapped at McDaniel


WESTMINSTER, Md. - The Hood College baseball team struggled to find any success at the plate in its doubleheader against McDaniel College, falling 8-4 and 8-1.

At the Plate
  • Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) led the Blazers at the plate going 4-for-7 with a double and run scored. 
  • Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) went 4-for-9 with a run scored and two stolen bases. 
  • Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) ended the day with two doubles, an RBI and scored once. 
  • Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) had two RBIs and a stolen base in game two.
  • Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) and Cameron Day (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) both had an RBI in game one. 
On the Mound
  • Joe Alexander (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) started game one and took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in three innings. He also walked one and struck out three in the outing. 
  • Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) gave up four runs on three hits in 1.2 innings in relief. The first-year student walked two and struck out two. 
  • Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale), Mason Salisbury (Colora, Md./Perryville) and Joe Monteleone (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) combined to hold McDaniel to one run on three hits over the final 3.1 innings. Scott-Daniels struck out two in 1.1 
  • Tyler Cooney (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) started game two, giving up one run on one hit. He walked four batters in one inning. 
  • Sawyers pitched again in game two and gave up only two hits in two innings in relief. 
  • Gavin Pollard (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) took the loss, letting in two runs and walking four. 
  • Colby Childs (Berryville, Va./Clarke County), Quade Gannon (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) and Kevin Nelson, Jr. (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) split the next 2.2 innings and surrendered five runs on four hits and four walks.  
  • Jim Ledford (Stafford, Va./Mountain View) finished game two for Hood giving up one hit in the eighth inning. He struck out one and walked one. 
McDaniel 8, Hood 4
  • Hood took the lead early, scoring one run in the first inning. Schwarzman led off the inning with a single up the middle, and later scored on a Day single through the right side.
  • McDaniel found its groove at the plate in the third inning with five straight singles to score three runs. Todd Calhoun, Joey Hubinger and Ben Davis loaded the bases and Tyler Yohn and Jake Smith knocked them in for a 3-1 lead. 
  • The Green Terror took control in the fifth inning on Hunter Kelly's bases-loaded triple to left field scored Davis, Yohn and Smith. Kelly crossed home on a two-out double by Connor Uhrig to give McDaniel a 7-1 lead. 
  • Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) led off with a walk for the Blazers in the seventh inning and later scored on a Kershow single up the middle to make it 7-2.
  • Uhrig answered for McDaniel in the seventh with a triple to deep center field, to drive in Billy Wheatley who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. 
  • Hood added two more runs in the eighth inning on a Rhue single up the middle that scored Saylor and Reyna.

  • McDaniel struck first, scoring once in the first. The game started with a single by Hubinger and a Davis walk. Cooneymanaged to get Yohn to ground into a double play, resulting in a runner on second with two outs. The next three batters walked, allowing  Davis to score. 
  • Hood tied the game in the third inning  when Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) was hit by a pitch and Reyna singled through the left side. Stout later scored on a double down the left field line by Saylor to tie the game at 1-1. 
  • The Blazers pitching staff struggled with command throughout game two. Smith was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning for the Green Terror before Pollard walked the four of the next five batters, enabling McDaniel to take a 3-1 lead.
  • McDaniel added three more runs with a two-out rally in the sixth. Wheatley drove in the first run with an RBI single and Uhrig was hit by a pitch to load the bases.Santino DeFilippo and Hubinger walked back-to-back to score Kelly and Wheatley to push McDaniel out in front 6-1.
  • Smith singled to start the seventh for the Green Terror, andhe later scored on a Goudeaux double. The last run of the game was on a double steal by McDaniel that plated Goudeaux.
For the Opponent 
  • Smith went 4-for-8 on the afternoon with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored.
  • Hubinger had  four hits, a double, and scored once. 
  • Kelly hit a triple in game one, had four RBIs, and scored twice. 
  • Ryan Kelly started game one and threw six innings. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out five to receive the win.
  • Tyson Nercessian threw the final three innings for the save, giving up three runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked two. 
  • Ryan Martino started game two, going seven innings and allowing one run on nine hits. He recorded two strikeouts to get the win.
  • Conor Henderson threw 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one strikeout.
Notes
  • Hood's record fell to 10-5 overall.
  • McDaniel improved to 11-6.
