FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College women's lacrosse team defeated the Griffins of Gwynedd Mercy 20-8.

- Julia Gregory (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Twp.) finished the night with career highs of five goals and nine draw controls.
- Mackenzie Demaio (Urbana, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) tallied six points with four goals and two assists. The junior also led the team with three caused turnovers and added a career-high eight draw controls. She moved into third place all-time at Hood with 58 caused turnovers.
- Abby Burnette (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) matched Demaio's six points via three goals and three assists.
- MacKenzi Wright (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) scored four goals for the Blazers.
- Brooke Harper (Sykesville, Md./Century) made three saves in the opening 22 minutes. Kayla Graef (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury), Ellie Glawe (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore), Remy Anderson (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) and Grace Guy (St. Mary's County, Md./Chopticon) split the remaining 38 minutes in net. Glawe made four saves and Anderson had a pair.
How it Happened
- The Blazers came out firing, scoring six goals in the opening 3:50. After GMU scored, Demaio assisted scores by Savannah Winpigler (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) and Wright for an 8-1 lead midway through the quarter.
- Three straight goals for the Griffins slowed Hood's momentum, but Wright scored with a just nine seconds left for a 9-4 lead at the end of one period.
- Hood started the second quarter with six unanswered goals including three by Gregory. A late score by Gwynedd Mercy's Alysia Collins made it 15-5 at halftime.
- Both offenses were quiet in the third quarter until 7:20 when Demaio started a four-goal run for Hood. Meghan Welker (Frederick, Md./Walkersville) scored her first career goal in the surge as Hood went into the final quarter with a 19-5 lead.
- Gwynedd Mercy scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter before Gregory's fifth of the evening made it 20-8.
Analysis
- The Blazers outshot the Griffins 34-22.
- Hood won the ground ball battle 18-13.
- The Blazers had the advantage on draw controls 21-10. The 21 draw controls were the most for Hood since winning the same number against Lycoming in 2018.
