YORK, Pa. - The Hood College softball team fell 5-2 and 4-0 at York (Pa.) in a Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth doubleheader.
Inside the Circle
- Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) took a complete game loss in the opener. The sophomore allowed two earned runs on eight hits and two walks, striking out four. She also knocked in a run at the plate.
- Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) and Lindsay Wilson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School) each allowed three runs in three innings in game two. Benden took the loss.
At the Plate
- Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) had two hits in the opener, including a double, and drove in one.
York 5, Hood 2
- The Blazers broke a scoreless deadlock with a two-run third inning. Colleen Blasko (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) had back-to-back, one-out singles. Pfleiger followed with a shot into the gap in right center to score Blasko for the game's first run. Gottleib drove in Saunders with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
- Morgan Sauers led off the bottom of the inning with a triple and came home on a base hit by Alyssa Harhigh to cut Hood's lead in half.
- York took the lead in the bottom of the fifth, thanks in part to a Blazer error. Daphne Adams tied the game with a sacrifice fly that scored Taylor Coon and Katie Fritz made it 3-2 when she drove in Harhigh with a single to right.
- In the sixth, Coon doubled and scored on a hit by Sauers and another error by Hood allowed Sauers to cross home plate later in the inning for a 5-2 lead.
York 6, Hood 0
- Natalie Rietema tossed a one-hit shutout for the Spartans, limiting the Blazers to just a single by Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) in the second inning.
- The Spartans got on the board with a three-run third inning. Harhigh hit a two-run home run to start the scoring, which was followed by consecutive hits by Bri McKeown, Adams and Fritz to make it 3-0.
- In the fifth, Adams drove in a run with an RBI double and scored on a Hood error for a 5-0 York lead.
- Another error by the Blazers in the sixth allowed Sauers to come home for a six-run lead.
- Hood's best chance came in the second inning, when Long singled and Kaelyn Blocher (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) was hit by pitch to put two runners on before Rietema got Wilson to ground out to end the inning.
For the Opponent
- Rietema retired 12 of the final 14 hitters for the game two win. She struck out four and walked a pair.
- Sauers had five hits in the doubleheader and scored as many runs.
- Harhigh homered among her four hits and drove in three.
- Amanda Criss pitched a complete game for the victory in game one. She struck out eight, allowing two runs on six hits.
