Alexander throws gem in split with Eastern on senior day


FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Joe Alexander (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) pitched a two-hit shutout in game one as the Blazers took game one 2-0 and dropped the second 7-1 on senior day.  

On the Mound
  • Alexander threw his second complete game shutout of the season for the win in the opener. The senior allowed only two hits in the first inning, retiring the next 19 Eastern batters while adding four strikeouts. 
  • Game two starter Tyler Cooney (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) pitched four innings and allowed four runs on four hits. The first-year student struck out seven and walked four and was charged with the loss. 
  • Gavin Pollard (Lumberton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) tossed a scoreless fifth inning. 
  • Kevin Nelson, Jr. (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock Twp.) gave up three runs on three hits in the sixth. Scott Ash (Middletown, Pa./Middletown) and Cole Whitton (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) combined to pitch a scoreless seventh. 
At the Plate
  • Stephen Sommer (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun) finished the afternoon with two hits, two RBIs and a stolen base.
  • Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) had two hits on the day with a triple and scored once.
  • Cristian Reyna (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) hit a double in game two, adding to two walks and a stolen base in game one. 
  • Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) recorded an RBI and stolen base in the doubleheader. 
  • Andrew Perkins (Fresno, Calif./Clovis North) went 2-for-3 in game two. 
Hood 2, Eastern 0
  • The Blazers struck first in the third inning. Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) walked and Austin Rhue (Milton, Del./Cape Henlopen) was hit by a pitch to set up a Sommer single up the middle to score Hood's only runs of the game. 
  • Alexander allowed two hits in the first inning and finished the inning without giving up a run. The senior was perfect for the remainder of the game, retiring the final 19 batters for the Eagles. 
Eastern 7, Hood 1
  • Eastern's Evan Barks and Matt McHale hit back-to-back singles to start the first inning. Sean Cottrell plated both runners with a single up the middle two batters later. Garrett Friend scored Cottrell with a two-out double down the left field line as the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead.
  • David Hunsberger walked to start the second inning, stole the next two bags and crossed home on a McHale sacrifice fly to left field for a 4-0 lead for Eastern. 
  • The Eagles added three more runs in the sixth inning. Hunsberger knocked in Logan Klember with a single to right field. Klember scored on a Barks single down the left field line and Barks crossed home following a Blazer passed ball later in the inning. 
  • Kershow tripled to right field to start the seventh inning and scored on a Schwarzman groundout to second for Hood's only run of the game.   
For the Opponent
  • Barks went 3-for-6 at the plate with a double, an RBI and scored twice.
  • Cottrell recorded two RBIs in game two. He also started game one on the mound and gave up two runs on three hits for the loss. 
  • McHale had two hits in game two with an RBI. 
  • Gavin Mikulski got the start in game two going 4.1 innings, giving up only four hits with two strikeouts to receive the win. Logan Culp tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits. 
Notes
  • Hood ended the doubleheader 17-18 overall and 10-11 in the MAC Commonwealth. 
  • Eastern moved to 10-26 and 5-16.
