Pfleiger sets season home run record in McDaniel split

FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College's Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) homered in both games of a non-conference softball doubleheader against McDaniel to break the Blazers' single season record with 10 on the year. Hood dropped the first game 6-3 before winning the nightcap 9-1 in six innings.

At the Plate
  • Pfleiger went 3-for-7 over the two games with two home runs and three runs batted in. The sophomore tied her own season record from 2022 with her homer in game one, then broke it with a solo shot in game two.
  • Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) had a pair of two-hit games.
  • Jordan Long (Middletown, Md./Middletown) also recorded two hits in each game and walked to reach base five times.
Inside the Circle
  • Rachel Benden (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus) went the distance in game two for her first win of the season. She allowed just one run and struck out three, scattering six hits and two walks.
  • In game one, Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) pitched a complete game but took the loss. She allowed six runs, four earned, on 11 hits and two walks. The sophomore, who had three hits as a batter on the day, struck out six.
McDaniel 6, Hood 3
  • Makayla Calamita hit a two-run homer in the first inning to put the Green Terror in front before Hood tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
  • Pfleiger tied her own home run, a solo blast to center, with one out. Gottleib singled and advanced to second on an error, then scored on base hit by McIntosh to tie the game at 2-2.
  • McDaniel reclaimed the lead in the second. Mandy Butz led off the inning with a walk and, after singles by Taylor Routzahn and Colleen Camburn loaded the bases, scored on a passed ball for a 3-2 lead.
  • Kylie Sears had an RBI single in the third and Calamita added another in the fourth for a three-run lead.
  • Long started Hood's fourth with a single and a walk by Colleen Blasko (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) put runners on first and second with one out. Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) doubled to left, driving in Long to cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • Butz pushed the McDaniel lead back to three in the seventh with a sacrifice fly that knocked in Calamita.
Hood 9, McDaniel 1 (6 innings)
  • Pfleiger was the first of eight Blazers to record a hit when she hit the first pitch she saw over the fence in left center for her record-setting 10th of the season.
  • The sophomore drove in a run in the second inning, when she drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in Lindsay Wilson (Pasadena, Md./Annapolis Area Christian School)
  • Hood added two more in the third for a 4-0 lead. Wilson had an RBI groundout and a run-scoring single by Blasko brought home another run.
  • McDaniel's only run came in the fifth when Olivia Dresser hit a leadoff double and scored on a base hit by Bella Sylvester.
  • The Blazers ended the game early with a five-run sixth. A Saunders walk and singles by Pfleiger and Gottleib loaded the bases. Benden helped her own cause with an RBI single to right. McIntosh's two-run base hit down the line in right made it 7-1. After Kaelyn Blocher (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) reached on catcher's interference, Long hit a single under the glove of the second baseman, driving in Benden and McIntosh to halt the game.
For the Opponent
  • Calamita had a four-hit opener and walked in game two.
  • Sylvester finished with three hits, including two in the nightcap.
  • Parker Murphy started game one and finished the second game. In the opener, she allowed two runs on five hits in three innings. In the second game, she was charged with five runs, four earned, and did not record an out.
  • Hannah Costa picked up the win in relief in the first game. She allowed a run on two hits and two walks in two innings. Mel Grant finished the game with two scoreless innings in game two for the save. She gave up four runs in the first 2.2 innings of game two before Costa pitched 2.1 scoreless frames of relief.
