Penalties doom women’s ice hockey versus Stevenson

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Hood College women's ice hockey team were unable to stay ahead of Middle Atlantic Conference opponent Stevenson at the Hagerstown Ice and Sports Complex, as the Blazers fell 4-2 despite an early goal.

Inside the Box Score
Averi Reider (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) and Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./University Liggett) both potted goals for Hood.

Lillian Scardicchio (Mundelein, Il./Mundelein Cons) and Samantha Faatz (Cape Coral, Fl./North Fort Myers) were credited with assists on Reider's tally.

Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./El Dorado) made 40 saves on the afternoon.

How it Happened
The Blazers started off hot, keeping pressure on the Mustangs by staying in the offensive zone for extended periods of time, and the constant shots paid off, as a shot from Reider hit the back of the net less than five minutes into the game.

Stevenson got right back into it off the faceoff though, getting zone time of their own and eventually tying things up just a few minutes later.

Hood was unable to sustain much more offense the rest of the period as penalties kept the Blazers from building too much momentum, but a rush with 30 seconds left in the frame led to Ancona scoring her fourth of the season and giving the team a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes of play.

After being in the box for more than they would have liked to, Hood finally got a chance to go on the power play just a few minutes into the second, but when the Mustangs managed to get a clear after stopping a flurry of Blazers' shots, a pass back to a defender took a funky bounce off a Hood skate and managed to find its way behind Grijalva to tie the game at 2.

Despite more power plays for Stevenson, Grijalva shut the door the rest of the period, keeping things tied heading into the third period.

Unfortunately for Hood, they were still on the penalty kill for 1:15 to start the final frame, and the Mustangs came out swinging, scoring with seconds left on their advantage to take their first lead of the game.

Although they managed to stay out of the penalty box the rest of the period, the Blazers were unable to find the tying goal, with Stevenson icing the game after an empty net goal with two minutes left and handing Hood a 4-2 loss.

For the Opponent
Meghan Croyle scored twice for the Mustangs.

Olivia DeGuire made 16 saves.

Notes
Hood drops to 2-3 (0-3) with the loss, while Stevenson improves to 1-4 (1-2).
