Women’s ice hockey downed at MCLA

NORTH ADAMS, Ma. – An early third-period goal was not enough to rally the Hood College women's ice hockey team to a comeback, as the Blazers fell to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts 2-1 in non-conference action.

Inside the Box Score
Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./University Liggett) scored Hood's lone goal.

Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./El Dorado) made 27 saves in the contest.

How it Happened
After both teams exchanged rushes to start the game, MCLA capitalized on the game's first power play after Hood had been called for cross-checking, as the Trailblazers got one past Grijalva and put the Blazers in a 1-0 hole.

Despite Hood going on a rush right after the ensuing faceoff they were unable to even things up, but good blocks and more saves from Grijalva kept her team down just one goal and on the power play after the first 20 minutes of play.

Unfortunately for the Blazers, they were only able to get one shot on goal in said power play, and eventually went down 2-0 as MCLA found the back of the net once again with 13:09 left in the second. That would be the only tally of the period once again
as Hood looked to find an answer to get back into the game with 40 minutes gone.

It looked like the Blazers found their spark coming out for the third period, as Ancona took advantage of a misplay from a Trailblazers defender to get Hood on the board just 23 seconds in, cutting their deficit in half.

Although they had multiple power play opportunities to tie the game and force overtime, the Blazers would not find the back of the net again, as MCLA goalie Juliette Barney made one last save with five seconds left to keep the game from going into overtime and handing Hood a 2-1 loss.

For the Opponent
Mallory Stuart and Carlen Bertrand scored for the Trailblazers.

Barney made 29 total saves on the evening.

Up Next
The Blazers look to get back in the win column and split the weekend series with MCLA in game two slated for Sunday, December 1 at 12 p.m.
