GLENSIDE, Pa. – The Hood College women's ice hockey team's hopes of an undefeated inaugural season will unfortunately not come to fruition, as the Blazers fell to Middle Atlantic Conference opponent Arcadia 3-1 on the road.
Inside the Box Score
Anna Bazylewicz (Santa Barbara, Ca./Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) scored Hood's lone goal, with
Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./University Liggett) and
Kayla MacKinnon (Blain, Mn./Breck) being credited with assists.
Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./El Dorado) made 52 saves in net.
How it Happened
Arcadia looked like the defending MAC champions right out the gate, scoring just 4:20 into the game to put the Blazers in an early hole.
After the Knights killed off Hood's first penalty, they would go on a power play of their own after the Blazers were caught with too many skaters on the ice. Fortunately for Hood, Grijalva stood on her head for the next two minutes, stopping each shot she faced during the penalty as well as the onslaught that happened the rest of the period, keeping the Blazers' deficit to just 1-0 heading into the second.
Unfortunately for Hood, Arcadia would start the second period similarly to the first, doubling their lead just three and a half minutes in as they continued their offensive pressure. Grijalva shut the door again afterwards though, helping kill off another
Knights power play over the next 13 minutes.
The Blazers were given a good opportunity to get back into the game with a 5-on-3 power play with five minutes left in the period, and Bazylewicz capitalized on it with a top corner rocket to get Hood on the board and cut their disadvantage to 2-1.
The Knights would get one more power play before the intermission though, and a quick give-and-go from Arcadia led to Haylee Kos finding space in the slot and pot her team's third goal of the game, sending the visiting Blazers to the locker room down 3-1 heading into the final frame.
An early penalty from Hood gave the Knights' dangerous power play a chance to add to their lead, but Grijalva was done letting pucks get behind her, turning into a brick wall and stopping every shot thrown her way the rest of the period.
Despite having a few better offensive zone pushes, Hood was unable to find the back of the net again before the clock hit zero and sending them back with the 3-1 loss.
For the Opponent
Karahkwenhawe White scored what would be the game-winner and assisted on Arcadia's third goal.
Jo Coates totaled 15 saves on the day.
Notes
The Blazers fall to 2-1 (0-1) on the season, while the Knights improve to 3-0 (1-0).
