Women’s ice hockey blanks Monarchs for first conference win

HAGERSTOWN, Md. – The Hood College women's ice hockey team picked up the program's first shutout and Middle Atlantic Conference win against King's College with a 3-0 victory.

Inside the Box Score
Kamryn Sohner (Hilliard, Oh./Sunnyvale) stopped all 35 shots in the shutout.

Averi Reider (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion Area) scored what would be the game-winning goal in the first period.

Reece Gall (Niagara Falls, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) and Caroline Kittell (Louisville, Ky./Rice Prep) both notched a goal in the win.

Renata Petrella (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) and Lillian Scardicchio (Mundelein, Il./Mundelein Cons) assisted on Reider's tally.

How it Happened
Both teams started the game trying to find their offensive footing as the first shot on goal did not come until just over three and a half minutes into the period when a wrister from Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./University Liggett) was blocked aside.

The Blazers turned on their offense once they got the first shot of the game, but a tripping call threatened to halt their momentum. Hood adjusted well though, allowing just one shot on goal during the ensuing penalty kill, going right back on the offensive once they were at even strength.

As the Blazers managed to keep the puck in the Monarchs' zone once their penalty ended, a beautiful passing play ended with Reider in the slot finding the top left corner of the goal to give Hood a 1-0 lead, which they would take into the first intermission.

King's was looking to flip the momentum starting off the second period, drawing a power play just one minute into play, but a great defensive play by Gall gave herself a shorthanded breakaway, converting on it to give the Blazers a 2-0 lead.

The Monarchs' power play almost cost them a second time when Dakota Ormiston (Scituate, Ma./Portsmouth Abbey) poked the puck away for another shorthanded opportunity, but a great save from Syd Dahl kept Hood's lead to just two where it would remain for the rest of the period as
the Blazers headed into the second intermission with a 2-0 advantage.

Hood was unable to add to its lead despite starting the final frame on the power play, but the backstop of Sohner would not be bested today as she turned aside shot after shot even as the Blazers found themselves in a 5-on-3 disadvantage.

With King's pulling their goalie with 3:30 left as they tried to find the start of a comeback, Kittell managed to strip the puck away from the Monarchs' defenders and iced the game with her second goal of the season, finishing the day's scoring and sealing the Blazers' 3-0 win.

For the Opponent
Dahl made 35 saves in the loss.

Notes
Hood improves to 3-8 (1-6) while King's drops to 2-6-2 (2-3-2).
