Monarchs strike back and even series with win over Women’s Ice Hockey

HAGERSTOWN, Md –  A late surge by the Blazers was not enough to overcome three power play goals by the Monarchs and in result fell in conference play 4-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Inside the Box Score

Hayley Turnbull (Tantallon, NS, CA/Mount Academy) made 33 saves on the afternoon.

Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./University Liggett) scored an even strength goal, her fifth of the season.

Samantha Faatz (Cape Coral, Fl./North Fort Myers) assisted on Hood's only goal.

Mia Cheesebrough (Mendota Heights, Mn./Two Rivers) won 14 of 19 face offs on the day.

How it Happened

Halfway through the second, Kings' jerseys got popular in front of the net as four straight shots were denied and one even deflected off the pad of Turnbull and hit the side of the net. The puck failed to be cleared and Maddie Vaughn of King's snuck a point blank shot in for a goal to take the 1-0.

In the second, a collision between a Blazer skate and the Monarch goalie resulted in a penalty and left the Blue & Grey shorthanded. Vaughn found net yet again and cashed in only 15 seconds into the power play.

Out of the second intermission, aggressive play emerged for Hood and started to contain the puck in their attacking zone.

Pesky Blazers attackers kept the puck near the crease and as one shot was saved but not hauled in, Ancona swiped it from the goaltender that was on their bottom and slid the puck past and in goal. Although the Blazers chose the ice instead of the snow post-blizzard, Ancona's showed tribute with her snow angel celebration.

Power play for the Monarchs came again and this time within six seconds a shot by Sokol deflecting off the chest of Vaughn and would result in the third goal of the day for King's.

Vaughn would finish her day on a short-handed Blazers squad when she found space and her shot rose and hit off the top of the glove go the goalie and inside the bars.

Analysis

The Monarchs put up 54 shots to the Blazers' 33. 39 of 54 were on goal.

The Blazers showed dominance in the face off department with the 26-14 advantage.

For the Opponent

Will McPherson held down the fort with 16 saves.

Vaughn scored all four goals for the Monarchs .
