Softball swept in final leg of Florida trip

KISSIMMEE, Fl. – The Hood College softball team leaves Florida on a sour note, losing to Washington College of Maryland 6-3 and Hope College 5-3 in the final doubleheader of their spring break trip.

At the Plate
Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) went 2-3 with an RBI against Washington College.

Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) was 2-4 with an RBI from the dish in game two against Hope College, as well as smacking a triple against Washington College.

In the Circle
Gottleib gave up five runs off of eight hits against the Shorewomen.

Sara Munson (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) also allowed five runs to score from eight hits in her outing against the Flying Dutch.

Washington College 6, Hood 3
The Shorewomen got the scoring going early, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after three innings before adding another run in the top of the fourth.

Hetzel got things going for the Blazers in the bottom of the fourth inning with a single, making it to third on a wild pitch and a Kara Heidlauf (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal High School) single before being driven in by Munson. A huge triple from Gottleib drove Munson home, but Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) popped out to first base to end Hood's attack prematurely.

Both teams managed to add a run to their total in the fifth inning, with Washington College tacking on another one in the top of the seventh. Down three in the bottom of the seventh, the Blazers could not find their offensive burst from earlier, going down in order to end the first game in a 6-3 loss.

Hope College 5, Hood 3
Hood managed to strike quickly in the final game of the trip, with Gottleib scoring from second on a Robin Charlton (Philadelphia, Pa./MaST Community Charter School II) strike to left field to take an early 1-0 lead in the first, doubling that lead in the third when Pfleiger scored on a sacrifice fly from Hannah Cohen (North Wales, Pa./North Penn High School).

Hope managed to tie the game up in the bottom of the third though, driving one girl in from third before stealing home the next at-bat, but the Blazers managed to cut them off before they could take the lead.

After a quiet fourth inning, the Flying Dutch showed their guns in the bottom of the fifth, taking the lead on a home and second base double steal, then tacking on two more runs to go up 5-2.

Needing some offense, Hood started off hot with a Lillie Larsen single, with a bad throw to first allowing Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) to reach first and Larsen to make it to third. Larsen would be driven in a couple at-bats later, and the Blazers looked poised to tie this game with the tying run on base and the go-ahead run at the plate. Unfortunately, that would be all the firepower they would get, as the next batter struck out to end the game early 5-3 in favor of Hope College.
