Softball sets strikeout record in split with Widener

CHESTER, Pa. – A record-breaking performance from Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) gave the Hood College softball team a 4-2 victory over Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponent Widener, but that momentum could not be matched in game two, as the Blazers fell 7-2 to end the day.

In the Circle
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) pitched each inning in game one, allowing just two runs while striking out a school-record 14 batters in a dominant performance.

At the Plate
Gottleib also performed with her bat, hitting an inside-the-park home run in game one and drawing two walks.

Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) went 2-3 with a walk and an RBI in game two.

Hood 4, Widener 2
The Blazers got the scoring started on just the third pitch of the game, as a deep ball hit by Gottleib got tangled up beneath the outfielders to allow her to go all the way across the diamond for an inside-the-park home run.

It only took one inning for the Pride to respond and tie the game up, but some clinical hitting from Pfleiger and Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) in the top of the third gave Hood a 3-1 lead.

Gottleib locked the game down for the most part after that, striking out batter after batter, officially setting the new school record when she recorded the third out of the sixth inning.

Hannah Cohen (North Wales, Pa./North Penn High School) sent a ball over the left field fence to improve Hood's lead to 4-1, and despite allowing a run in the bottom of the frame, Gottleib ended the game appropriately with her 14th strikeout of the day to solidify the team's 4-2 win.

Widener 7, Hood 2
Although the Blazers got on the board in the top of the first, the Pride quickly tied it in the bottom of the inning before six more runs over the next three.

Hood got another run on the board via a Pfleiger home run in the sixth inning, but could not get anything going in the final frame, getting just one batter on base before the next three went down in a row to end the game 7-2 in favor of Widener.

For the Opponent
Sara Clymer finished game two batting 3-4, scoring twice herself.

Sam McCarthy went 3-3 in the second game, adding two RBIs and a stolen base.

Notes
Hood moves to 5-13 (1-5), while Widener goes to 6-8 (2-4).
