Softball goes even in battle with Spartans

FREDERICK, Md. – A three-run first game in a doubleheader against Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponent York (Pa.) was enough for a walk-off win for the Hood College softball team, but that same output in game two was not enough as the team split the day against the Spartans, winning game one 3-2, but losing 16-3 in game two.

In the Circle
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) allowed just two runs off of three hits and struck out six batters in the game one victory.

At the Plate
Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) batted a thousand with a 3-3 performance in game one.

Kaelyn Blocher (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) went 2-3 with a triple in the first game.

Gottleib finished the day's first game 2-4 with an RBI.

Hood 3, York 2
The Blazers got on the board right away with a bases-loaded single, but despite having the bases loaded with only one out, they would ground into a double play to end their threat with just one run to show for it.

That would be the only scoring for either team until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Gottleib took advantage of Blocher's triple, driving her home to double Hood's lead.

Unfortunately for the Blazers, York would slightly break out in the sixth inning, using momentum from a lead off home run and a Hood miscue to tie the game at 2-2.

With Gottleib holding down the fort in the top of the seventh, the bottom of the inning started off well, with Robin Charlton (Philadelphia, Pa./MaST Community Charter School II) and Blocher both singling. Charlton was able to make it to third as the throw to second got past everyone in the infield, and a deep pop up from Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) allowed her to tag up and score to give the Blazers a 3-2 walk off victory in the first game.

York 16, Hood 3 (5 inn.)
This one got away from the Blazers too quickly for them to handle, as the Spartans put eight runs across the board in the first three innings.

Hood looked like they wanted to make a comeback run in the third, as Charlton led off the inning with a home run and some clinical hitting brought two more runners in and got the bases loaded. A hard-hit ball from Sara Munson (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) looked to clear the bases
going down the line, but York's first baseman stretched out to make the grab and end the inning before their lead was cut into anymore.

Another eight runs across the fourth and fifth for the Spartans put the Blazers in danger in run-rule territory, and they were unable to get back under the deficit limit, ending the game early in a 16-3 loss.

Notes
Hood moves to 10-20 (2-10), while York goes to 19-13 (8-4).

Up Next
The Blazers get little rest as they make their way to Harrisonburg, Virginia for a doubleheader against Eastern Mennonite University Sunday, April 21 at 1 and 3 p.m.
