Men’s Volleyball Senior Day spoiled by Pride

FREDERICK, Md. – Before the final home match of the regular season, the Hood College men's volleyball team celebrated their two seniors' careers with the team. Unfortunately, Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponent Widener did not let them celebrate for long, sweeping the Blazers 3-0 in the team's penultimate match.

Inside the Box Score
Charles Casas (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen High School) led the team with 11 kills on the evening.

Sean Seely (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage High School) finished the match with eight digs.

Gael Bravo (Lanham, Md./Bowie High School) led Hood with 14 assists and two aces.

How it Happened
Despite the first set starting close with the Blazers behind just 3-2, the Pride took complete control by going on a 16-2 run. Although it seemed to already be a wash, Hood nearly battled all the way back, answering with an 11-1 run of their own to bring their deficit to just 20-15. Widener decided they did not want to entertain the home crowd any longer though, regaining momentum to end the set on a 5-1 run to take the early 1-0 match lead.

The second set started off significantly better for the Blazers, jumping out to an early 4-0 lead looking to make it a best-of-three match. Their offensive outburst was short-lived though, as the Pride went on a long 15-2 run to once again swing the momentum completely in their favor. There would be no comeback attempt this time though, with Widener closing out the set 25-15 and put themselves in position to complete the sweep.

Hood kept up in the third set with just a 9-7 disadvantage almost halfway through, but a 4-0 run by the Pride allowed them to once more get a firm grip on the set, not giving the Blazers anything the rest of the way as they finished the match sweep with another 25-15 set victory.

For the Opponent
Matthew Christ had eight aces during the match.

Both Josh Matchett and Ethan Cox finished with three total blocks.
