Softball caught in talons of Falcons

GRANTHAM, Pa. - Hood College Softball continues conference play with two losses on the road against Messiah with scores of 2-1 and 9-1.

Inside the Circle

  • Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) pitched the entirety of game one allowing two runs on six hits and struck out seven batters on the day.

  • Sara Munson (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) suffered the loss in game two allowing eight earned runs and two walks.

At the Plate

  • Chloe Saunders (Middletown, Md./Middletown) drove in Hood's sole RBI in game one.

  • Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) had three hits on the day and scored both Hood's runs.

  • Hannah Cohen (North Wales, Pa./North Penn High School) hit a double in her first plate appearance in game one.

Messiah 2, Hood 1

Early traffic on the bases for Hood as Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) drove a ball through the right side and Cohen doubled to put two runners in scoring position with two outs. However, the Falcons got out of the jam with a groundout.

The Blazers returned to bat in the third with another chance to score. Gottleib drove a single to left field and she stole second shortly after. Saunders then drove that runner in scoring position home with hit to left for a 1-0 lead.

Messiah was left quiet until the fifth inning where runners occupied first and second base with no outs. The Falcon's Schlabach singled up the middle and knotted the game up 1-1. Gottlieb was able to escape the inning with no further harm after Cohen fielded a ground ball and cut the runner down at home plate to preserve the score.

The Falcons started out the seventh with a bunt single by Dyer to put a base runner on. The next batter Burger would single to centerfield. With Burger rounding first and heading to second a game of tag was played to cut down Burger meanwhile Dyer rounded the bases and scored from first to end the game.

Messiah 9, Hood 1

The Blazers continued the early inning pressure as Pfleiger and Gottleib singled with nobody out. A Saunders fielder's choice brought in Pfleiger to yet again put Hood up 1-0.

Messiah's Dyer would walk to leadoff the bottom half of the first and steal second. Dyer would score on an RBI groundout by Schlabach to tie the game 1-1.

The Falcons would continue to score eight runs in the final three innings to overpower Hood and end the game.
