ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - The Hood College softball team finished their season with two close contests against Elizabethtown in a doubleheader rescheduled from earlier in the season, pulling out a 4-1 victory in the first game, but falling in a tightly contested 2-1 game two.
In the Circle
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) finished her season pitching with an emphatic win, allowing just one earned run while getting eight batters to whiff in game one.
At the Plate
Gottleib went 4-7 with her bat, hitting three doubles and accumulating three RBIs across both games.
Hannah Cohen (North Wales, Pa./North Penn High School) finished the day 3-6, including a 2-3 performance in game two.
Mallorie Hetzel (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) hit 3-4 in the days first game, scoring once herself.
Hood 4, Elizabethtown 1
While the Blazers were unable to get anything going in their first at-bat of the day, the Blue Jays managed to get a triple out of their second batter, driving her home with a well-placed sacrifice bunt to put Hood in an early 1-0 hole.
That would be the only scoring Gottleib would allow, as she managed to get herself out of some jams in other innings early in the game but doing enough to allow the Blazers to get their bats hot, with herself coming in clutch with a bases-clearing double with two outs in the fourth, as Hood stormed ahead with a 3-1 lead.
After Gottleib struck out the last two batters in the bottom of the inning, the Blazers managed to extend their lead their next time up, as a deep
Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) double allowed Cohen to put another run on the board.
Only one batter for Elizabethtown was able to get on base from the fifth inning and beyond, with Gottleib putting down the hammer once again in the seventh by striking out another pair of batters to end the game 4-1 in favor of Hood.
Elizabethtown 2, Hood 1
The Blazes switched positions with the Blue Jays early on, as they immediately struck in the first inning, as a leadoff double for Gottleib ended up paying off when Cohen drove her home with a single. Unfortunately, Hood was unable to push anymore
runners across, ending the top of the inning with a slight 1-0 advantage.
With neither team able to get anything going in the second inning, Elizabethtown caught a lucky break in the bottom of the third, as their first batter made it to first on a dropped pop fly in the outfield. This was all the Blue Jays needed to get something started, loading the bases with no outs before eventually scoring twice to take the lead.
Despite just a one-run deficit, Hood only managed to get three more hits the rest of the way, unable to take advantage of lights-out pitching from
Sara Munson (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) as they finish the season with an oh-so-close 2-1 defeat.
For the Opponent
Sarah Birner finished game two batting 2-2 with an RBI.
Olivia Prosser batted 2-3 in the second game of the day.
Notes
Hood finishes their season 14-24 (4-10), while Elizabethtown finishes theirs 9-25 (3-11).
