READING, Pa – In an early win or go home matchup in game two of the MAC Championship Semifinals, Hood College's baseball team was outlasted by Alvernia 7-5 on a damp Saturday in May and was eliminated for the MAC Championship playoffs.
On the Mound
-
Dutch DeProspero (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) got the nod and pitched seven innings allowing five runs on two walks while striking out three.
-
Harrison Ludington (Woodbridge, Va/Forest Park High School) was called into relief in the eighth allowing one earned run and no walks.
At the Plate
- Jacob Saylor (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) went 2-for-4 scoring two runs and issued a walk.
- Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) went 2-for-3 scoring a run, cashing in an RBI and drawing a walk.
- Tyler Schwarzman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) went 2-for-4 while scoring a run and was hit by pitch.
- Cameron Day (Hagerstown, Md./Clear Spring) had two RBIs on the day.
Alvernia 7, Hood 5
-
After a quiet first two innings, The Golden Wolves scored two runs before Ben Houghton, who had three hits in game one of the regular season series, lifted a homer to left to increase the lead to three in the third inning.
-
The Blazers put up a crooked number in the fifth starting with three ducks on the pond with one out thanks to two free passes to first and a Saylor base hit. Day, known for his power, got the job done with a single up the middle to push the score 3-2. Stout then put a single of his own down the line and tied the ballgame.
-
Alvernia in the bottom half scored again as the choice to throw to second resulted in a throwing error and scoring the runner at third base.
-
Saylor and Stephen Sommer (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun) started the seventh with back-to-back singles but threatened to go to waste as two outs later there were runners at the corners. Richard Kershow (Eatons Neck, N.Y./Northport) muscled a single to center scoring Saylor to tie it up. Moments later, a wild pitch would score another runner for a 5-4 Hood lead.
-
With DeProspero emptying the tank, a double by Alvernia's Hansen knocked him out of the game for Ludington to hold the Golden Wolves. Three straight batters singles and now the opposition sat with a 7-5 lead.
