Men's Volleyball uses five-set comeback to dowse Phoenix

FREDERICK, Md. - The men's volleyball team earns their first win of the season after trailing in the third set but recuperating to win the final two with a final score of 3-2 over Wilson on Thursday night.

Set Scores

Hood won in five sets with scores 28-26, 25-19, 25-19, 25-23 and 15-12. Blazers win set one and then sweep four and five.

Inside the Box Score

Charles Casas (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen High School) ends up with 26 kills on the night.

Gael Bravo (Lanham, Md./Bowie High School) serves 34 assists with 12 digs.

Blake Catts (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) earns 11 kills with three blocks.

Hood 28, Wilson 26

Hood trailed early 5-1 but climbed back with early kills from Bravo and Seely. They traded points late until Seely capitalized at the service line and put the Blazers up 21-17. Attack errors kept Hood from closing the door and they entered extra volleyball to determine the set. A long rally was finished by a clever skipped set and attack by Cameron Nugent (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) to take the lead 27-26. The following play ended the set with a block by Nugent and Zander Kirchner (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land).

Wilson 25, Hood 19

The Blazers showed some life being four points away giving up the second set with a rejection at the net by Seely and later a return by Catts that slipped through the hands of someone in the back row to start a streak.

A couple of attack errors by the Phoenix created a 21-18 match with a chance to overcome the eight-point deficit. However, Xavier Webber of Wilson with a hot serve and a Ryan Koontz kill ended the threat and knotted the match even.

Wilson 25, Hood 19

Wilson started to take over in close proximity of the net and instead of high lofting sets, were making their money via sets right above the net line and slamming them down.

Hood found their way through the jumping ability of Catts and Casas and that threat opened the door of skip sets of the likes of Seely and Nugent.

The set traded scores until 14-14 point until some trouble at the service line for the Blazers left them chasing the opponent. Late service errors down the stretch kept the Blazers out of the set win column.

Hood 25, Wilson 23

The Blazers outscored the Phoenix early and a play at the net between Seely and an opposing opposite hitter left the ball stuck between their hands but Seely muscled his way into a point good for Hood.

Even with a lead as much as four, it felt that Wilson was hot on the trail. Keeping the ball on the opposing side left plenty of room for chaos on the Blue & Grey side. Brendan Stutz (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) got some work in the front line and his kill was left with just inches of the line to protect the lead.

A big block by Casas and Alex Barton (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) move the momentum in favor of the Blazers and the following point result in an acrobatic set by Bravo and a Casas slam and we would end up going to five sets.

Hood 15, Wilson 12

Casas turned his hitting percentage up and took over with three kills to the back middle of the opposition to go up 4-0. Later, a dig by the Blazers was deflected to the first row of the stands where Bravo laid out and put it back into play to eventually result in a Wilson error.

Wilson would creep back into the fifth set and a violation at the line would pull them within a 11-9 score. The two-point difference would carry all the way to the 14-12 score one final sprint and kill by Catts put the Blazers in the win column for the first time this season

For the Opponent

Satvik Sharma dishes 40 assists and 11 digs.

Jacob McCoy earned 12 kills.
