FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College women's ice hockey team was unable to find the back of the net in its first game against Middle Atlantic Conference foe Wilkes University, falling 4-0.
Inside the Box Score
Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./Anaheim Lady Ducks AAA) made 46 saves in the loss.
How it Happened
The Blazers fell into trouble early with a tripping call just over three minutes in but only allowed one shot during the two minutes to kill it off. After both sides exchanged short rushes, the Colonels were able to stay in Hood's defensive zone just a bit too long, with a one-timer from Chayce Hyndman finding the back of the net to put the Blazers in a 1-0 hole midway through the period.
Shortly after the goal, Hood had a great chance with their first power play of the game, but Wilkes goalie Audrey Milne was just able to keep the Blazers at bay and kill the penalty. The Colonels tried to double their lead with a late rush for the final few minutes of the period, but Grijalva stood tall to keep her team behind just one after the first period.
Hood got another crack at the power play 14 seconds in when Wilkes was called for handling the puck but was unable to get anything past Milne once again, and the Colonels began getting more shots on goal after getting back to full strength. The Blazers went on the penalty kill again just under eight minutes to play in the period, and Hyndman was able to get a second shot by Grijalva with a second left in the penalty for a 2-0 lead. Another power play goal for Wilkes made it 3-0 less than two minutes later, and Hood would head into the second intermission down a field goal.
Both teams exchanged rushes for a majority of the third period, and the Blazers looked like they had an open net after Ancona deked Milne for a wraparound goal, but the puck went across the goal line and somehow stayed out. The Colonels managed to add a fourth goal with 1:30 left in the game to round out the scoring and hand Hood just its second loss of the season.
