Men’s Basketball falls to host Captains at the Shootout

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The break did not treat the visiting Blazers well as a quiet first half put them behind the mark to eventually fall to Christopher Newport 96-79 at the Freedom Center on Monday night, the first of two games of the Captain Shootout.

Inside the Box Score

Kullen Robinson (Alexandria, Va./Alexandria City) scored his 22 points via a 10-for-17 performance from the field and hauled in eight rebounds.

Jevon Yarbrough (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) continued his scoring streak with 22 points with half coming from the line and added eight rebounds and five assists.

How it Happened

Host Christopher Newport would score their first 18 of 20 points via the three while being propelled by the early success on the boards with Tyson Henderson establishing dominance.

The 1-2 Yarbrough and Robinson punch prevailed early, but the inefficiency from other contributors put the Blue & Grey on the other side of the scenario they are used to playing with. By the end of the first half the Blazers shot only 18 percent from beyond the arc while the 12 that were dropped in the bucket at a 50-percent clip for the Captains created an almost 20-point deficit at the half.

In the second half, Jude Huseby (Frederick, Md./Urbana) would set the tone by scoring all nine of his points in the first five minutes. Their best marks came in the second half in a final effort to reach striking distance. Troy Fulton (Denver, N.C./Lincoln Charter) hit a pair of deep shots and Robinson got busy in the paint as the Captains held on to a consistent lead. The Blazers settled back in but far too far behind to get their footing.

"Credit to CNU—they controlled everything from the jump and took us out of our game, said head coach Chad Dickman. "We just looked rusty and our defensive effort's also gotta be better if we want to beat high -caliber teams like them. Hopefully, that was a wake-up call and we are ready to bounce back tomorrow."

For the Opponent

Tyson Henderson hit seven threes on his way to a game-leading 29 points. He rocked the defensive boards with seven to cap off the night.

Toa Hollenbeck his five triples of his own and his 25 points added another threat from deep.

Up Next

In quick turnaround, the squad will take on Johnson and Wales at 5 p.m. tomorrow right back in the Freedom Center.
