NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - After game one of the Captain Shootout where the match against hosts turned sour, the men's basketball in game two routed Johnson & Wales 101-72 led by Jevon Yarborough's triple double on Tuesday night.
Inside the Box Score
Yarbrough scored 17 and accompanied it with 11 assists and 10 rebounds to earn the program's first triple double since Garrison Linton (New Market, Md./Oakdale) back in 2024.
Garrett Cox (Glen Allen, VA/Glen Allen) hit his season high four triples in a 16-point outing.
Jude Huseby (Frederick, Md./Urbana) showed his continued success in Newport News with 15 points and a 6-for-8 from the field night.
How it Happened
Hood set the tone early, racing to a 11-0 lead, Huesby was found in transition and bodied his way to the bucket. Later, Cox and Yarbrough netted back-to-back threes to extend to a 19-point runaway lead midway through.
The 56-36 halftime advantage was thanks to the hot shooting from beyond the arc and the 18 assists for Hood scrambling the Wildcat defense.
The second half the Blazers shot at a 58-percent clip with the usual suspects Kullen Robinson (Alexandria, Va./Alexandria City) and Yarbrough running downhill and taking advantage of the tired legs of the opponent.
Both guards shot perfect from the field in the half and the 30-point lead created a mass substitution and cruise control for the Blue & Grey.
"We came out ready to go tonight and did a really nice job bouncing back from yesterday," said head coach Chad Dickman. "I thought we moved the ball much better today and kept the defense scrambling for most of the game." "We were much more connected defensively overall and didn't give up nearly as many open shots as we did against CNU. Great to head into 2026 on a high note."
Analysis
The Blazers had a season high 28 assists as a squad.
Hood shot a demanding 54.2 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three-point range for the game, compared to Johnson & Wales' 40.7 total from the field.
For the Opponent
Cooper Wiley was not to be outshined with his 20 points and 11 rebounds for a double double.
