Women's Ice Hockey falls in final home game of inaugural season against Wilkes

HAGERSTOWN, Md. - The women's hockey team battled the intense conference leader in Wilkes in their closing home game of their inaugural season but fell 7-1 on Friday night.

Inside the Box Score

Sofie Ancona (Grosse Point Farms, Mi./Saint Clair Shores Saints) scored the Blazers goal in the third. That marks her 11th of the season.

Dakota Ormiston (Scituate, Ma./Portsmouth Abbey) and Kady Kratzer (Whitehall, Pa./York Lady Devils U19) had three blocks a piece.

Three goalies shared the night at goaltender, Kamryn Sohner (Hilliard, Oh./Dallas Stars Elite AAA) and Hayley Turnbull (Tantallon, NS, CA/Mount Academy) had 13 saves each while Emily Warren (Nepean, ON, CA/Ottawa 67s AAA) had 23 of her own.

How it Happened

The game started with both teams on the offensive, both goalies were put in one-on-one opportunities on goal in the first three minutes, but the dam refused to break.

With a shot and a deflection on the far side making it past Sohner putting Wilkes on the board. On the ensuing faceoff, the Colonels took the two on two down the right side and even shot one did not make it past the goaltender, the repossession, and the wrap around shot around the goal by Wilkes' Kaczorowski for the 2-0.

The Colonels brought many different looks to score and created opportunities for good shots. Attackers would sometimes all crash into the middle for chaos, sometimes the wrap around would be a shot and another time be a pass inside; no scenario looked quite the same.

Wilkes used their physicality and put Hood's young skates to the test. Many scrums for the puck became more of a hip-check battle and skaters battle through contact to get the shot opportunity. Skaters Scardicchio and Bazylewicz were among those who were winning some of those battles against the opposing upperclassman skates.

Wilkes would strike again in the second period as Pacilio and Bouchard the 3-0 deficit would ensue. The Colonels would try another ambush on the ensuing puck drop but instead a sliding Renata Petrella (Cranberry Township, Pa./Nashville Jr. Predators U19) would block any sight of the crease and keep the opposition out.

The first penalty of the game gave the Blazers the power play with 10 minutes to go in the second period. Wilkes' 55 stormed with the puck and chewed clock. Sophie Ancona used her speed to get Hood on the attack and set up the offense. The Blazers had a few chances with looks near the pipe, but the penalty was eventually killed.

Later in the third, Ancona took matters into her own hands and intercepted a pass in Wilkes' attack zone and used her signature speed for the breakaway up the ice. She beat out the last defender and cut over the middle to give her a good shot path to make it by the wall of Olson.
