TYSONS, Va. – The Hood College baseball team could not keep up with Marymount University's offense, as the Blazers fell 13-5 on the road in non-conference action.
At the Plate
Rhett Robbins (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest) batted 3-5 with a triple on the day.
James Gruenfelder (Port Jefferson, N.Y./Earl L. Vandermulen) went 1-3 with a double and two runs scored.
AJ Haines (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) finished the afternoon 2-5 with two stolen bases.
On the Mound
Tim Rio (Manassas, Va./Unity Reed) allowed five earned runs off six hits to take the loss.
How it Happened
Marymount wasted no time getting runs on the board, scoring twice in the first inning and three times in the second. Although Hood loaded the bases in the top of the second inning, a pickoff at first and a pop out to third ended things before the Blazers were able to do damage.
Both teams came out strong in the fourth inning, as Hood got a baserunner on when Gruenfelder was hit by a pitch before Robbins drove him home with a triple. A
Joe Monteleone (Haddon Heights, N.J./Haddon Heights) single scored Robbins, and a few batters later the Blazers once again had the bases juiced but could not capitalize to tie the game.
The Saints clearly did not want Hood to get any closer, as they sent three runners around the diamond to make the Blazers' deficit 8-2.
After a quiet couple of innings,
Ty Broughton (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) got Hood on the board again in the seventh when he scored from third on a wild pitch, but a four-spot from Marymount in the bottom half of the inning made it a tall task for the Blazers to come back from.
In the top of the eighth, Hood once again had runners on all three bases, managing to plate two while keeping them all occupied, but a pitching change saved the Saints from any further risks, especially after they added an extra run for good measure in the bottom half of the inning.
Unfortunately for the Blazers, they would not make a dent in the top of the ninth inning to force the bottom half to be played, heading home with a 13-5 loss.
For the Opponent
Andrew Schaeb went 3-4 with a walk and two RBIs.
Ryan Cuadros ended the game 3-4 with a double and an RBI.
Bennett Zippel allowed one run on two hits in 2.2 innings, striking out four to earn the win.
