Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey | | Joel White, Graduate Assistant

Women’s ice hockey comeback bid falls short against Stevenson

REISTERSTOWN, Md. – An early multi-goal hole was too much for the Hood College women's ice hockey team to overcome in the third period, as the Blazers fell 7-4 to Middle Atlantic Conference opponent Stevenson.

Inside the Box Score
Astrid Wilbur (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) finished with two goals.

Olivia Sharkoski (Bradenton, Fl./Lakewood Ranch) and Kady Kratzer (Whitehall, Pa./Whitehall) tacked on a goal each.

Ella Bynan (Park City, Ut./Park City) ended the game with two assists.

Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./El Dorado) made three saves to start the game before being replaced by Kamryn Sohner (Hilliard, Oh./Sunnyvale) who made 16 saves in relief.

How it Happened
Hood got a chance to kick off the scoring with a power play less than three minutes into the game, but both shots on goal it managed were turned away. After teams exchanged rushes, the Blazers found themselves on the penalty kill, where Stevenson
would open the scoring just 10 seconds after it started. The Mustangs would strike again less than two minutes later, then tacking on another goal just 10 seconds later when Megan Swick stole a faceoff and rushed in to score uncontested.

Although Hood managed to score when a seeing eye shot from Kratzer found the back of the net for her first of her career, Stevenson would answer a minute and a half later to maintain a three-goal lead heading into the first intermission.

The second period started off similarly badly for the visiting Blazers, as two Mustangs scored 47 seconds and 1:04 into the frame to make it a 6-1 affair. Hood was unable to score in the period, and a penalty with just 15 seconds left threatened to halt the momentum it had built with five quick shots on goal just a minute earlier as the squads headed into the locker room with Stevenson still up by five.

The Blazers killed off the rest of the penalty to start the third period, and a Sharkoski tally with just under eight minutes left seemed to breathe some life into the team, as they took a page out of the Mustangs' book and added a second goal just 17 seconds later to turn it into a 6-3 game. Stevenson added a goal of its own just a couple minutes later to ice the game though, with Hood adding one more with less than three minutes left to finish the scoring for the night, a 7-4 loss.
