CARLISLE, Pa. – The Hood College softball team could not come away with a win in a doubleheader against Dickinson College, as the Blazers were fell 2-1 in the first game and 8-1 in the second match.
At the Plate
Sam Larkin (Pasadena, Md/Chesapeake High School) went 2-4 with a stolen base and a double in game one.
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) batted 2-4 and stole a base in game two.
Hanna Janke (Calgary, Alberta, Can./Bishop Carroll) hit 2-3 in the first game.
In the Circle
Gottleib struck out 10 batters while allowing just two runs in the day's first game.
Sydney Weaber whiffed five batters through 3.2 innings in game two.
Dickinson 2, Hood 1
The two teams combined for three hits over the first two innings, but both offenses went off in the third, as Gottleib doubled to start the inning and saw the bases get loaded just a couple batters later.
Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) drew a walk to open the scoring with just one out, but the Blazers were unable to get anymore runs across before the top half ended.
Gottleib struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the third, but the third out turned out to be harder to get than anticipated, as Dickinson's third batter singled and then managed to score from first and tie the game after a deep double. The next batter doubled to swap places with the current runner on second and take the lead, but Gottleib struck out the next batter up to stop the bleeding.
Neither team was able to score in the following three innings, and with Hood down up to bat in the top of the seventh trying to force a bottom half, Janke got things going with a single. The Blazers got a runner on each base once again with two outs, but the Red Devils forced a popup to end the threat and take a 2-1 game one win.
Dickinson 8, Hood 1
It did not take as long for the scoring to open up in the day's second game, as Dickinson plated a runner in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
A double from
Bailey Pysher (Pottstown, Pa/Pottsgrove) to start the top of the third would be taken advantage of when
Lizzie McConnell (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) drove her home to tie the game for Hood, but that would be all the Blazers would get.
The Red Devils broke the game open in the bottom of the second, getting four hits and plating six runs to make it a 7-1 ball game.
Unfortunately for Hood, they would not score the rest of the game despite having the bases loaded in the top of the fifth. Dickinson would add one more run in the sixth to close the scoring and send the Blazers home winless on the day.
For the Opponent
Jane Lloyd finished the day 4-5 with two walks and an RBI.
Erin McMahon went 1-2 with two walks and two RBIs in game two, scoring twice herself.
