Baseball wins one-run war over Spartans

FREDERICK, Md. - The squad digs deep with two home one-run wins over York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon 9-8 and 6-5 including avoiding a late crooked number in game one and six-run eighth inning to win game two.

In the Batter's Box

Ty Broughton (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) collected four hits on the day with four RBIs.

Keegan Brennan (Lake Wynonah, Pa./Nativity BVM) went 4-for-7 on the day and scored twice.

Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) had three hits on the day including three RBIs.

Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) led the Blazers in game two with three hits.

On the Mound

Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale) got the ball in game one and pitched five innings one shutout baseball allowing only one hit.

Frank Spaide (Bensalem, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) pitched an inning and a third allowing three hits.

From the Bullpen

Mason Salisbury (Colora, Md./Perryville) relieved in game one allowing six runs on three hits.

Harrison Ludington (Woodbridge, Va/Forest Park High School) shut the door with a run to spare in the seventh inning of game one.

Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) went 4 2/3 innings to pick up Spaide only two runs on four hits and had three strikeouts.

Mason Potter (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) followed Sawyers in game two and had two innings of shutout relief.

AJ Haines (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) went 1-2-3 in the ninth of game two to earn the save.

Hood 9, York PA. 8

Hood's first bat started with a two-out rally of singles but runners were stranded at the corners and it remained scoreless.

Efficiency was key in the early innings including the top of the third amounted to only four pitches with three ground balls to the infield for quick work for Scott-Daniels.

The bottom half of the inning saw Brennan serve a ball to left to start followed by a red-hot Robbins ripping a double down the left field line and scoring Brennan all the way from first. Broughton snuck a ball through the infield and Robbins did his work on the base path to beat the throw and to throw a deja vu 2-0 lead just like game one.

First trouble would happen in the top of fourth with an infield sing and a walk to put some traffic on the bases for the Spartans. A groundball handled by the second baseman Jonathan Tyndall (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) would be walked over to first to end the threat.

Patterson would continue the big swing nature with a double over the right fielder's head to plate Matthew Stout (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) to extend the lead in the fifth.

York would unfold in the bottom of the sixth with an overthrow of first base to put Tyndall on base and a dropped ball at first on a bunt coverage would put Gannon aboard. Brennan would go back to the well with another bunt to the left side and reach safely for the first hit of the inning. Haines swing to left-center would score two more. Patterson would do more damage on a first pitch single and plate two more.

Trouble in paradise late with the Spartans scoring three runs in the last inning and reloading the clip by reloading the bases. Ludington got the call to shut the door.

A couple knocks and a booming 3-run homer by York's Deiming now put the score 9-8 with one out to go. Ludington would force the last batter to pop up into his glove to salvage the win.

Hood 6, York PA. 5

The top of the second for the Spartans featured back-to-back hits and a hit by pitch to leave three ducks on the pond with no outs. Only one strikeout could occur before another pair of singles put a three spot for the Spartans. Sawyers got the call in relief and after a walk forced two ground balls to end the bleeding.

Luck turned in favor of Hood in the eighth as Haines singled and took advantage of the overthrow by the York shortstop to take second. With Robbins getting a free base on balls, Broughton launched a ball over the left field fence for a three-run homer and launched the Blazers into a rally.

More hits would come via Patterson and a pinch-hitting Amrit Brown (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) but not without the second out of the inning occurring.

With the inning in danger of ending, a botched ball at second base scored Patterson from third to keep the inning alive. Brennan, with a soft groundball to the right side wheeled his way into a safe call at first and the tying run crossing home. Haines would serve a ball to left have the leading run cross and a 5-0 drought turned into a 6-5 lead.

Just as fast as Hood flipped the script, Haines took the mound and pitched the clean inning to earn the sweep.
