Softball battles to split against Spartans

YORK, Pa. – The Hood College softball team came away even on the day against Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth foe York College of Pennsylvania, winning game one 3-1, but falling 6-5 in game two.

At the Plate
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) hit 4-7 across both games, stealing two bases in game one.

Sam Larkin (Pasadena, Md/Chesapeake High School) batted 2-4 with a double and two RBIs in game two.

Kara Heidlauf (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal High School) hit a solo home run in the first game.

Lizzie McConnell (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) finished game two batting 2-3 with an RBI.

In the Circle
Gottleib struck out five batters and allowed just one earned run in the game one win.

Hood 3, York 1
Offense was a commodity to start game one, as neither offense could muster more than a hit in an inning. Although the Blazers threatened to break the game open in the top of the third with the bases loaded and only one out, they were unable to push anything across.

The Spartans would draw first blood in the bottom of the third when their batter and runner on second exchanged places with a double to left center and give the first run of the game to the home team.

Hood took the momentum from their previous time at the plate and took it to the fourth though, loading the bases and getting a free run when Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) was hit by a pitch.

That was not the end of the day for the Blazers, as they added another run in the fifth before Heidlauf capped off their scoring in the sixth with a blast to left field that was out of the park as soon as it hit the bat.

York would only manage one more hit in the final two innings as Hood held on to come away with the 3-1 win.

York 6, Hood 5
Scoring was not nearly at a premium in game two, as the Spartans built up a 4-0 lead in just the first two innings.

The Blazers took advantage of a leadoff single from Kaelyn Blocher (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) in the third and sent her around the diamond to get on the board, but York would answer with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth to regain their four-run lead.

Despite being down late in the game, there was no quit with Hood, as it scored once in the fifth, twice in the sixth, and had momentum to potentially take the lead in the seventh but only managed to get the tying run across to force the bottom of the inning
to be played and hope for extras.

Unfortunately, there would be no chance given to get the weekend sweep, as the Spartans just managed to get the one run they needed across home plate to secure the win and send the Blazers home with a 6-5 defeat.

For the Opponent
Rylee Dreyer went 2-2 with a walk and two runs scored in game two.

Gretchen Barstad hit 4-7 across both games, batting in three runs and earning the win in the circle in the day's second game.

Notes
The Blazers move to 11-11 (3-3), with the Spartans now 7-13 (3-3) on the season.
