Softball outruns Cougars, tramples Terriers

BARTOW, Fl. - The Hood College softball team had a successful first day at the THE Spring Games event, defeating Kean University 6-1 and Thomas College (ME) 8-2 at the Bartow Park Sports Complex.

At the Plate
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) finished the day 3-5 with three walks and two runs scored, smacking a double against Kean.

Jocelyn Pfleiger (Quakertown, Pa./Dock Mennonite Academy) batted 3-4 with three RBIs in game two versus Thomas College.

Sam Larkin (Pasadena, Md/Chesapeake High School) and Hanna Janke (Calgary, Alberta, Can./Bishop Carroll) both hit 2-3 with an RBI against the Terriers.

In the Circle
Gottleib took the win in game one, allowing just one run on three hits.

Sydney Weaver (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) moved to 2-0 on the season with a game two win, striking out six.

Hood 6, Kean 1

The Cougars got on the board quickly, leading off with a single and sending her around the diamond for an early 1-0 lead.

It did not take long for the Blazers to respond though, knotting things at 1-1 when a deep Gottleib double scored Lizzie McConnell (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) from second.

After a relatively quiet couple of innings, Hood took the lead for the first time in the fifth inning, with Gottleib and Larkin both scoring from second thanks to deep enough singles from Pfleiger and Janke, respectively.

There was a bit of trouble in the top of the sixth as Kean managed to load the bases with two outs, but a hard hit ball to third was gathered by Larkin and rifled to first just before the batter's foot hit the bag to get out of the jam. In the bottom half of the inning, the Blazers took notice of the earlier threat and added three insurance runs after loading the bases themselves.

Hood then took care of business in the top of the seventh, sitting the Cougars' batters down in order to take a 6-1 win.

Hood 8, Thomas (ME) 2

Both teams got on the board in the first inning, with the Blazers taking advantage of a leadoff walk of Gottleib and sending her all the way home, and the Terriers answering with a run of their own in the bottom of the first.

Unlike Thomas though, Hood would continue scoring as the game continued, taking a one-run lead in the second inning before the offense exploded in the third, adding two runs and keeping two batters on base before recording a single out. An errant throw plated two more runs to cap off the Blazers' four-run inning as they took a 6-1 lead.

The Terriers added one more run in the bottom of the fifth to cut Hood's lead to four, but the threat was short-lived, with the Blazers scoring insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to round out the scoring for the day and secure their day-one sweep.
