FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College softball team came out 1-1 on the day against McDaniel College, showing out for the faculty who showed up to celebrate the team in game one 5-3, but falling 4-1 in the nightcap.
At the Plate
Rebecca Gottleib (Linthicum, Md./North County) went 2-3 with a walk, a double, and three RBIs in game one.
Sara Munson (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) hit a perfect 2-2, drawing a walk and driving in a run in the first game.
Kara Heidlauf (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal High School) hit a home run in the first game of the day.
In the Circle
Gottleib struck out three and allowed just two earned runs in four innings of play to earn the game one win.
Sydney Weaver (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) came in to start the fifth and allowed just three hits as she picked up her first career save.
Hood 5, McDaniel 3
The Green Terror struck first in the second inning after a bases-loaded single, but they would only manage one run before Gottleib struck out the final batter to limit the damage.
After
Sammy McIntosh (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) and Munson both got on, Gottleib came up and smacked a double to drive McIntosh in and tie the game at 1-1.
Hood's bats came up big in the bottom of the third, with eight batters coming to the plate as the Blazers stormed into a 4-1 lead.
A leadoff home run from Kaylah Morosko in the top of the fourth cut the lead to just 4-2, but Heidlauf said she could do it better and hit a moonshot over the cars parked behind the Volpe Athletic Center to restore Hood's three-run advantage.
McDaniel would add a run in the sixth to make it a two-run ball game, but would not get any closer, with Weaver getting the last out herself and securing the 5-3 victory.
McDaniel 4, Hood 1
This time around the Blazers would draw first blood when
Bailey Pysher (Pottstown, Pa/Pottsgrove) hit a sacrifice fly deep enough to score Heidlauf from third.
Munson faced a bases-loaded jam with no outs to start the third inning but managed to limit the damage to just two runs allowed as the Green Terror jumped ahead.
Unfortunately, that second-inning run would be all Hood could get across, with McDaniel adding runs in the fifth and seventh to hand the home Blazers a 4-1 defeat to end the evening.
For the Opponent
Morosko went 3-3 with a home run and a double in the first game.
Bella Sylvester hit 3-4 with a double in game two.
