Baseball falls in pitcher's duel with Widener

FREDERICK, Md. – Skylar Albright (Hendersonville, N.C./Hendersonville) goes the distance in game one of the series against Widener as the Blazers produce seven hits for seven singles but fall in the pitcher's duel 2-0 on Friday afternoon at FCC.

In the Batter's Box

AJ Haines (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) had a pair of hits on the day.
Ty Broughton (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) went 2-for-4 joining the multi-hit club.
Jack Patterson (Boyds, Md./Northwest) had a base hit and drew a walk.

On the Mound

Skylar Albright (Hendersonville, N.C./Hendersonville) threw a complete game allowing two runs on eight hits along with four strikeouts.

Widener 2, Hood 0

The Pride snuck a base hit through the infield to break the ice, but Albright responded with a swinging K while mixing in the off-speed followed by a flyout to put two away. While the next batter was on the cusp of being retired, a pulled stroke through the left side scores the game's first run.

In the bottom half of the first, the Blazers would set the tone for the rest of the game with the series of events. Haines ripped a single through the left side and Rhett Robbins (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest) laid down a pristine bunt to put two on and nobody out. Sanders of Widener worked out of the inning creating awkward contact to preserve the 1-0.

The next two innings each team would leave a runner on base but were made quick work by the Friday starters of both squads, Sanders with the fastball on the outer half and Albright with the curveball with tough movement.

The Pride would strike again but without such commotion, a double that landed on the left field line and some trouble on the relay put Widener's Bukowski 90 feet away from scoring. Albright again gets the next batter to strikeout but a soft groundball to the left side with a half swing scores the second run.

The sixth and the ninth inning showed promise with runners in scoring position for the Blazers, but groundballs in the infield would strand runners and Widener work themselves to a win via a pitcher's duel.

Notes

Hood falls to 11-22 on the season, 6-10 conference record.
