FREDERICK, Md. – After scoring within the first minute, the men's soccer team was ambushed with three goals in the first half and came close in a scrappy second half but fell to Marymount 3-1 on Wednesday night for their first loss of the season.
Inside the Box
Terrell Funchess (Taneytown, Md./Henry E. Lackey) nets his first career goal and marked an assist.
James Knowlton (Ijamsville, Md./Urbana) earns his second goal of the season.
Chino Delgado (Hyattsville, Md./Bladensburg) had two assists.
Jonah Erb (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) made five saves.
How it Happened
Out the gate on a harmless possession in the backfield for Hood,
Jackson Quenzer (Westminster, Md./Gerstell Academy) served a ball to Delgado on the far side where he had one-on-one duty with his defender with intent for damage. Delgado served a cross into a box and Funchess executed a perfect noggin to score just a minute in.
The Blazers would be hit with a trifecta of Saints goals. The Saints would be held off just minutes before finding an attacker downfield and shooting a one-hop to equalize the game. Marymount would pull ahead after a free kick from afar would be checked down to Shooter Rojas who on the run leaning away from goal put one up top of goal. The third goal was hidden behind a wall of Blazers on a free kick, off the foot of the Saint and only in sight when it hit the back of the net.
With new hope, Hood would capitalize on a Delgado kick to Funchess header denied before Knowlton found the inside of the post before it trickled in and the Blazers were on the heels of the visitors in the 47'.
The Blazers pressed forward outshooting Marymount 11-7 in the second half and earning four corner kicks. The cards showed heavy contact between teams, not dirty play. A match that seemed to have quite the gap a year ago turned into a marathon. With all the stoppages, momentum would strike and flip on a dime to keep both teams in the fight.
Hood's defense tightened up after halftime but couldn't find the equalizer despite several late chances, including two shots in the final minute by
Caleb Terry (Severn, Md./Annapolis Area Christian).
Notes
After falling 4-1 in the previous match, the Blazers posted a 3-2 final in this match.
13 yellow cards were issued in this match, seven for Hood to Marymount's six.
