Field Hockey falls late to Blue Jays

FREDERICK, Md. – The field hockey team battled with a thin roster on a rainy fall night but fell to the visiting Blue Jays of Elizabethtown 3-0 at Thomas Athletic Field on Tuesday night.

Inside the Box Score

Kate Haufe (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) put two shots up to lead the team.
Allie Wallin (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) collected eight saves on the evening.

How it Happened

The first quarter of play was spent in close quarters to the Blazers' goal, with the visiting Blue Jays with six penalty corners and six shots on the net but kept clean by the defense and the first-year keeper.

Wallin dropped to her left, right and bottom to keep shots from below out and forcing Etown to shoot high and wide of goal. Abby Chiavetta (San Jose, Calif./Leland) bodied a rope sent towards the goal from an open attacker to help the clean slate.

Wallin would be tested in the one-on-one twice on the breakaway but stepped up and smothered the attack to bend and not break. As Etown peppered the goal, Chiavetta again filled the gap not occupied by the keeper to deflect the ball away. The defense faces five corners in a minute and a half left at the end of the half while the rained picked up.

Hood worked themselves into the attacking zone in the third, a shot by Emma Numme (Shrub Oak, NY/Lakeland) deflected off a defender and was recovered by Haufe for her shot to go just wide of the net. On the counterattack, a Blue Jay went coast to coast and was too much speed not to be the game's first scorer and now the Blazers trailed 1-0.

The Blue Jays would extend their lead via a deflection of an attacker and into a shot by Etown's Fino past the keeper. Despite the deficit increasing, the time spent with possession increased for Hood's offense creating more looks for young attackers.

Notes

The Blue Jays put 29 shots on the evening with 21 corners.
