Men's Soccer seizes win over Colonels

FREDERICK, Md. – The men's soccer team turned big opportunities into scores while being outshot by Wilkes in the 2-1 win over the Colonels at Thomas Athletic Field on Saturday afternoon.

Inside the Box Score

Jonathan Fuentes (Hagerstown, Md./Oakdale) scores his first of the season, second of his career.

Terrell Funchess (Taneytown, Md./Henry E. Lackey) scores his second to hit the ground running.

Zeth Zambrano (Austin, Tx./Barca Residency Academy) and Cristian Topovich (Frederick, Md./Oakdale) rack up assists.

Adam Labows (Leonardtown, Md./Leonardtown) makes two saves in the match.

How it Happened

Topovich lined up the free kick and in harmony dropped a dime in the box for Funchess to use his dome to score within seven minutes.

The early juice flowed within both teams as a flying kick in the attacking zone lined up a strike from a Wilkes attacker and the rope was hauled in by Labows. A failed clear shortly after resulted in the attack regaining possession and have a shot from just inside the box to curve outside the post.

The next portion of the half would be diffusing dangerous attempts by Wilkes, Jackson Quenzer (Westminster, Md./Gerstell Academy) and Orlando Portillo (Silver Spring, Md./John F. Kennedy) on the charge cutting the wires on the explosives.

Hood would yet again seize their chance as some pinball action in the Blazers attacking zone would leave Zambrano open from far out. Zambrano would try from downtown and the keeper would block the shot but would land belly-down, just for Fuentes to clean up with a soft touch and the squad from Frederick would extend the lead.

The hosts wouldn't go unscathed as the Colonels would poke a goal in with one-timer stopped by the Blazer goalie and was redirected by another attacker for the score.

Wilkes would have a another crack at a goal after the Blazers seemed to have pickpocketed the attacker, but instead swatted at the thief's hand and now had numbers with the defense out of position. Labows was the man to beat and his slide deflected the ball out of the way to preserve the score.

Chino Delagado would get his fair share of looks in front of goal in the final minutes to keep the Colonel defense honest and chew clock.

Notes

Wilkes put up more attempts than Hood 19-11 despite the score.

The Blazers led 6-3 in shots on goal.
