Women’s ice hockey nipped by Golden Wolves

READING, Pa. - The Hood College women's ice hockey team was unable to complete the weekend sweep of Middle Atlantic Conference rival Alvernia University, falling 3-1 in game two.

Inside the Box Score

Lillian Scardicchio (Mundelein, Il./Milwaukee Jr. Admirals U19) scored Hood's lone goal, with Renata Petrella (Cranberry Township, Pa./Nashville Jr. Predators U19) assisting it.

Maggie Grijalva (Fullerton, Ca./Anaheim Lady Ducks AAA) made 20 saves in the loss.

How it Happened
Despite the Blazers winning an early faceoff in the offensive zone, the Golden Wolves would take away the puck for a breakaway, with Alexis Oliveira capitalizing on the opportunity and putting Hood in a 1-0 deficit just 42 seconds in. Alvernia continued pressuring Grijalva, but the sophomore netminder was unfazed by the early tally, stopping each shot she faced over the 10 minutes.

The Blazers would not register a shot
on goal for the first 11 minutes, but put a flurry of shots on net once they did. They were unable to get anything past goalie Stephanie Skorupa though, and Hood remained down a goal heading into the first intermission.

Another
early attack from the Golden Wolves would overwhelm the Blazers, and the visitors would find themselves down a pair of goals just over a minute into the second period. Although
Hood created more chances for itself trying to start a comeback, a tripping penalty cut its momentum short, and Alvernia would fully wrest it away with a power play goal that made it a 3-0 affair. Despite two power play chances towards the end of the period, the Blazers would still be goalless after 40 minutes of play.

Needing a spark, Hood decided to take a page out of the Golden Wolves' book, as
Scardicchio got the Blazers on the board just 1:24 into the third. Unfortunately, that would be as close as they could get despite outshooting Alvernia the remainder of the period, as Skorupa would stop any more chances and hand Hood a 3-1 defeat.

For the Opponent

Oliveira, Laila Tosi, and Emma Hart scored for the Golden Wolves.

Skorupa made 36 saves in the win.

Analysis

Hood outshot Alvernia 37-23.

The Golden Wolves went 1-2 on the power play, while the Blazers did not
score on any of their three advantages.

Alvernia had a 28-26 edge in faceoffs.

Notes

The Blazers drop to 7-5-2 (5-5-2), and the Golden Wolves improve to 8-4 (7-3).
