How it Happened
The Blazers were down 4-1 to start set one, but
Emerson O'Connor (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) would set teammate
Cam Madden (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) up for the kill as the score was now 4-2. Hood was able to tie it up 4-4, after a Stevenson error, and a
Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) kill. The teams traded points back and forth, but the Mustangs would extend their lead 11-6 over the Blazers. Despite the deficit, Hood continued to battle, and another O'Connor kill would help chip away into Stevenson's lead as the score was now 14-9. The Blazers would earn back-to-back kills later in the set from
Brynn Cochran (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) and
Jaylin Anderson (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville), with the score at 19-14 still in favor of the Mustangs. The Blazers looked to comeback on the Mustangs but a late run by Stevenson would allow them to take set one 25-15.
The first points of set two would go to the Blazers after
Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) would set up
Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) for the Kill. Stevenson would answer back and go up 5-2. As the set progressed, it would be the same story with Ricketts setting up Betley, now with the score at 8-5, still in favor of Stevenson. The Blazers added two more points after kills from
Brynn Cochran (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) and
Janiyah Thornton (Waldorf, Md./Southern Maryland Christian Academy), as Hood was only down 8-7. Stevenson would go up 14-8, and Hood would take a timeout to regroup, as they got back on the board with a
Cam Madden (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) kill and the score now at 14-9. The Blazers fought to stay in contention, but the Mustangs were able to close the door on Hood and go up 2-0 in the match, after a 25-14 win.
The Mustangs came out fast and went up 8-0 as the Blazers would take a well needed timeout. Hood would get on the board after a
Jaylin Anderson (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) kill and error by the Mustangs. Stevenson would keep their foot on the gas and take a 13-2 lead as Hood searched for answers. Hood earned some well needed points, and they found them in
Grace Tamburin (Wheeling, WV./Wheeling Park) and
Janiyah Thornton (Waldorf, Md./Southern Maryland Christian Academy). After a
Emerson O'Connor (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) ace the Blazers were down by 10. The Mustangs started fast and ended strong as Hood was unable to find their footing and dropped set three 25-10.
