WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hood College men's volleyball team's extra week of rest seemed to cool them down a bit too much, as the Blazers fell to Gallaudet University 3-1 in the nation's capital.
Set Scores
The Bison won 25-16, 22-25, 25-22, 25-18.
Inside the Box Score
Charles Casas (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) led the team with 13 kills.
Cameron Nugent (Manahawkin, N.J./Southern Regional) ended the evening with 27 assists.
Dane Lyons (Taneytown, Md/Francis Scott Key) finished the game with 17 digs.
How it Happened
After losing the first two points, a kill from
Sean Seely (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) helped get Hood the next two to tie things up before Gallaudet retook control with a 4-1 run. Another Seely kill got the Blazers close at 13-10, but six straight points for the Bison put the set just out of
reach, putting Hood down 1-0 in the match.
The Blazers kept up much better in the second set, always staying within two or three points of Gallaudet. Down 14-12 midway through the set, a five-point run gave Hood a 17-14 advantage, and although the Bison managed to stay within one or two points, the Blazers hung on to take the set and tie the match 1-1.
Set three was a battle from the start, as both teams constantly traded the lead without ever getting too big of an advantage. Hood did manage to start a run and take a 15-11 lead, but Gallaudet immediately got back to within one point. The Bison had a late 5-1 rally that gave them a 20-19 advantage, and although a pair of kills from Casas put the Blazers ahead 22-21, Gallaudet would score the next four points to steal the set and take a 2-1 match lead.
Needing to rally and force a fifth set, Hood played well to start the fourth, with Casas and
Blake Catts (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) building a slight 9-7 advantage early on. A 6-1 run from the Bison put it on the back foot though, and the Blazers would only manage to get back-to-back points once more the rest of the way, with Gallaudet eventually closing out the set and handing Hood a 3-1 loss on the road.
For the Opponent
Zachary Bippus led the Bison with 14 kills.
Troy Holcomb had 32 assists.
