FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College softball team came up just short of a split against Dickinson College, falling 8-1 in game one and 2-1 in game two.
At the Plate
Hanna Janke (Calgary, Alberta, Can./Bishop Carroll) went 2-4 in game two.
In the second game,
Amy Montgomery-Snoke (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) finished 1-2 with a walk.
Kara Heidlauf (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal High School) hit 1-3 with an RBI in game one.
In the Circle
Taylor Lowe (Laurel, Del./Delmarva Christian) struck out eight batters in the game one loss.
Montgomery-Snoke pitched two innings and allowed one run, taking game two's loss.
Dickinson 8, Hood 1
Lowe locked things down to start the game, striking out five batters in three innings to keep things scoreless heading into the fourth. After allowing a leadoff walk in the fourth it looked like she had locked back in to strike out the next two batters, but a pair of hits from the next two batters gave the Red Devils a 2-0 lead.
Sam Larkin (Pasadena, Md/Chesapeake High School) kicked the bottom of the fourth off with a hard single to right field after turning on a changeup, but the next three Blazers batters went down in order to end the threat early.
Dickinson's offense showed up to start the fifth, quickly loading the bases with just one out. Lowe got the next batter to pop out and get one out away from escaping the jam, but a bases-clearing double put Hood behind 5-0 beforehand.
The Blazers got the bottom half of the inning started off right with a
Bailey Pysher (Pottstown, Pa/Pottsgrove) single, but a fielder's choice and strikeout saw them still have a runner on first, but with two outs. A Janke hit to the outfield gave Hood some life though, and a Heidlauf single to right field allowed the runner on second to come around and score the Blazers' first run of the season. Although they were still within striking distance, the next batter would strike out to end the inning just when the comeback started to look feasible.
Unfortunately for Hood, that would be the only run it would score in the contest, as the Red Devils added three more to their own score between the final two innings to hand the Blazers an 8-1 loss.
Dickinson 2, Hood 1
It took some time for both offenses to get going in the second game, as each team would only manage to get a runner on third once through the first four innings. However, with two outs in the top of the fifth, Dickinson would string together a double and single to plate the game's first run to put Hood behind once more as the game headed into the sixth inning.
Once again, the Red Devils managed to put enough offense at the plate to push another run across, but with two outs in the bottom of the inning, the Blazers put together a solid offensive outing to load the bases before a past ball allowed them to get on the board. Unfortunately, that would be all they would get with the rally, as a hard-hit ball to second base was just able to be corralled enough to toss to first and get the third out of the inning.
Montgomery-Snoke kept Dickinson off the board in the seventh inning to set up a potential walk off for Hood, but the Blazers went down in order and finished with a 2-1 defeat.
For the Opponent
Jenna Lloyd went 4-5 with two walks and an RBI on the day
Abby Kohan finished game one with 11 strikeouts and one earned run.
