How it Happened
Just 10 seconds into the game, Merrill netted her first goal in the contest to give the Blazer an early advantage.
Shortly after, teammate
Julia Gregory (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Twp.) scored for Hood to give them a 2-0 lead.
The Hornets settled in offensively and netted their first goal of the game, to chip into the Blazers lead.
Unfazed by Lynchburg's goal, Hood responded quickly with a goal by
Rachel Harper (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge), and followed that up by Merrill snagging her second goal in the contest.
The Blazers' offense was rolling through the first quarter, and earned themselves a 4 to 1 advantage over the Hornets.
Despite Hood's fast start, Lynchburg needed a response and found one after two goals by Sydney Dumas to cut the lead to just one, still in favor of the Blazers.
The Blazers were unable to net another goal to end the first quarter, as their offense cooled down, and it seemed the Hornets started to heat up as they found the back of the net just before the end of the first quarter.
Headed into the second, both squads were knotted at four a piece.
Unlike the first quarter, it was the Hornets who started fast offensively, which saw Lynchburg net four unanswered goals against the Blazers.
Maggie Merrill (Marriottsville, Md./Marriotts Ridge) responded for the Blazers and stopped the bleeding a bit, but the Hornets quickly answered, and continue to lean into the momentum as they held a 9 to 5 lead over Hood.
Hood didn't back down, as
Mia Treney (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) found teammate
Emma Massey (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) for a goal to stay in contention with Lynchburg.
Each time Hood looked to fight their way back into the game, the Hornets had an answer.
Headed into the break, Lynchburg led Hood 11 to 6, but the Blazers would look for a spark in the second half.
Early into the third quarter it seemed to show shades of the first quarter with the back and forth goals, but Lynchburg found a rhythm offensively and never got out of it. They were able to hold the Blazer to a single goal by Merrill, which was her fourth of the game.
Headed into the fourth, the Hornets were up 17 to 7.
Hood couldn't find any answer to Lynchburg's offense as they hit their stride down the stretch.
Despite the Blazer best efforts and attempts to get back into the contest, the deficit was steep and Hood would fall at the end of regulation 20 to 11.
For the Opponent
McKenna Steinau had five goals, while teammate Sydney Dumas netted four in the game.
