Baseball splits Saturday conference action against Eastern

ST DAVID'S, Pa. – Baseball concluded their second conference series of the season against Eastern  on the road, losing game one of the doubleheader 4-0 for their first conference loss of the season, but completing a late comeback in game two to win 5-4 in extra innings.

At the Plate

Rhett Robbins (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest) batted 3-5 with a walk in game two, hitting a double and driving in a run. Robbins also collected a pair of hits in game one.

Kamari Chisolm (Gainesville, Va./Bishop O'Connell) finished the second game 2-5 with a walk and two RBIs.

Sean Seely (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) smacked a pair of doubles in the second contest of the day, coming around to score both times.

On the Mound

Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale) allowed four earned runs in his three innings pitched in game one.

From the Bullpen

Mason Potter (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) held down the fort in relief game one, allowing only two hits in a scoreless three innings.

Aaron Heller (Philadelphia, Pa./Jack Barrack Hebrew Acad.) threw five scoreless innings in the second game, striking out three.

Liam Moriarty (Aldie, Va./Lightridge) pitched a no-hit final two innings and allowed just one baserunner to earn his second win of the season in game two.

How it Happened – Eastern 4, Hood 0

The Eagles put a four-spot in the second inning, in unlikely fashion. After the first two batters reached base, a double play gave the Blazers momentum and left only a runner on third with two outs. Eastern proceed to score runs on the next two Abs via single and double before a homer capped off the inning.

The middle innings were quiet, the Blazers trying to ignite while Potter's balanced work from the bullpen held off the hungry host lineup. One last attempt at a rally came in the top of the seventh with both Jonathan Tyndall (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) and Quade Gannon (Felton, Del./Lake Forest) reaching base but the inning ended with a ground ball to second base.

How it Happened – Hood 5, Eastern 4 (10 inn.)

Although the Blazers scored in their first trip to the plate in the second game, the Eagles responded with a two-RBI double in the bottom half of the frame to take the lead.

Hood's next three batters went down in order, but Eastern's got starting pitcher Mason Sawyers (Culpeper, Va./Culpeper County) into trouble with runners on first and second with just one out. The Eagles would take advantage of the opportunity the very next batter, as a single up the middle scored them both to put the Blazers in a 4-1 hole.

The third inning looked shaped up to be another big one for Hood with it working the bases loaded with just one out. A Jason Rivera (Smithsburg, Md./Saint Maria Goretti) base hit scored a run and moved everyone else over a base, but after Eastern brought in a new pitcher, the next two batters went down in order to end the Blazers' threat.

Neither team put anything on the board in the fourth or fifth innings, but Hood played excellent small ball in the top of the sixth and scored a pair of runs to tie the game 4-4.

Both teams' bats were quiet for the next few innings, and after the Eagles went down quickly in the bottom of the ninth, it looked like the squads might be in extra innings for a while. The Blazers clearly did not want to be away from home longer than they needed to though, as Tyndall led the inning off with a walk. After moving him to third with two outs, Chisolm hit a hard grounder to second base and beat the throw to first to allow Tyndall to score.

After taking the lead for the first time all day, Moriarty headed back out to the mound for the bottom of the 10th and threw a perfect frame to complete Hood's comeback 5-4.

Notes

Hood moves to 10-10 (5-1), while Eastern now sits at 12-7 (2-4)
