Softball pecked by Blue Jays

FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College softball team fell just short of a split against Elizabethtown College, falling 11-3 and 5-4 at home.

At the Plate
Lizzie McConnell (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) went 2-4 with an RBI in game one.

Amy Montgomery-Snoke (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) was a perfect 4-4 on the day, getting a pinch-hit-single in the first game before singling in all three at-bats of game two.

Bailey Pysher (Pottstown, Pa/Pottsgrove) finished the day batting 4-8, driving in a run in game one.

Rory Achey (Lewisberry, Pa./Red Land), Kara Heidlauf (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal High School), Riley Hertzog (Ocean City, Md./Stephen Decatur), and Taylor Lowe (Laurel, Del./Delmarva Christian) all batted 2-4 in the nightcap, with Achey hitting an RBI-double.

In the Circle
Lowe struck out seven batters and allowed six earned runs in six innings to take the loss in game one.

Sydney Weaver (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) allowed just four earned runs in the game two loss.

Elizabethtown 11, Hood 3
After a scoreless first inning, the Blue Jays tacked on a pair of runs in both the second and third innings and managed to keep the Blazers off the board. Despite keeping Elizabethtown from pushing any runners across in the fourth, two more two-run innings in the fifth and sixth made it an 8-0 game with Hood on the verge of being mercy-ruled.

The Blazers would not go down without a fight though, getting one hit at a time to move runners up and plate three of them to keep the bases loaded, but could not push anymore across before getting their third out of the inning.

A three-run top of the seventh restored the Blue Jays' lead though, and Hood was unable to answer with anything in the bottom of the frame.

Elizabethtown 5, Hood 4
It was once again the second inning that kicked off the scoring, but this time it was just a single run for Elizabethtown. Although it added a second run in the top of the third inning, the Blazers responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the third when a deep Achey double scored McConnell from second.

Another run for the Blue Jays in the fifth put Hood in a 3-1 hole, but the Blazers managed to tie things up in the bottom of the sixth and give themselves a bit of momentum.

Unfortunately, Elizabethtown added another pair of runs in the top of the seventh, and although Hood was able to get a run across and have the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the inning, the Blue Jays were able to field a grounder and throw it to first just in time to prevent the tying run from scoring and hand the Blazers the loss.

For the Opponent
Lily Baldwin went 4-4 with an RBI and a double in game two.

Brooke Huczko batted 3-5 in the first game, stealing two bases and batting in two runs.
