Softball brings enough water to split with Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – The Hood College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Wilson College, winning game one 3-1 but falling in game two 5-2.

At the Plate
Taylor Lowe (Laurel, Del./Delmarva Christian) finished her day batting 6-8, going 4-4 in game one with three doubles.

Lizzie McConnell (Stevensville, Md./Kent Island) batted 2-4 in game one, racking up two RBIs and stealing a base.

Anna Sommerkamp (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) went 2-3 in the first game of the da.

In the Circle
Lowe whiffed seven batters in the game one win, allowing just one run on three hits.

Sydney Weaver (Landisville, Pa./Hempfield) took the loss in game two, allowing just one earned run on two hits before being replaced by Sara Munson (Inwood, W.Va./Musselman) who threw 2.1 innings of just one-hit ball.

Hood 3, Wilson 1
After the first batter for the Blazers struck out, Lowe smacked a double to the wall to get them their first hit of the game, and after a Sam Larkin (Pasadena, Md/Chesapeake High School) base hit moved her to third, McConnell came in and hit a ball back up the middle to score Lowe and give Hood a 1-0 lead.

The third inning was almost déjà vu for the Blazers, as Lowe got on base with another double before being driven home by McConnell on a single through the middle of the infield that doubled their lead.

Although Wilson threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning after loading the bases with just one out, but Lowe got the next batter to pop up for an infield fly rule and fully got out of the jam by getting the last batter to hit it straight to Larkin to throw to home for the force out.

Both offenses showed up enough in the seventh inning, with Kara Heidlauf (Mount Joy, Pa./Donegal High School) hitting an RBI-single to bring Hood's lead to 3-0, and despite the Phoenix breaking up the shutout and having the tying run at the plate, Lowe was able to get her to pop up right to her to end the game and secure a 3-1 win.

Wilson 5, Hood 2
The Phoenix flipped the script for the second game of the day, plating four runs in just the first inning.

Unfortunately, the Blazers could not get anything going for most of game two, with Wilson adding a fifth run in the bottom of the third. Hood found life in the fifth inning and was able to get two runs across after a Heidlauf double, but that would be the only
scoring in the game for the Blazers, ultimately falling 5-2.

For the Opponent
Sydney Hartle went 2-3 in game two, hitting a double and scoring twice.

Julia Wilkes struck out seven batters in five innings in the nightcap.

Up Next
Hood travels to Chestertown, Maryland for a doubleheader against Washington College (Md.) Wednesday, April 15 at 3 and 5 p.m.
