FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College baseball team provided late runs in both ends of the doubleheader against conference for Albright, but couldn't take advantage of the six fielding mistakes of the Lions and fell 9-4 and 4-3 on Friday afternoon in Reading, Pennsylvania.
On the Mound
Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale) started game one with four innings of work allowing seven earned runs.
Austin Ferreira (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) had the best performance from the pen in his three innings of one-run baseball in game one.
Tim Rio (Manassas, Va./Unity Reed) got the start in game two and gave four innings of work allowing four runs on two hits.
Mason Potter (Ashburn, Va./Stone Bridge) matched that in his four innings in relief.
Inside the Batter's Box
Kamari Chisolm (Gainesville, Va./Bishop O'Connell) walked thrice in game two and scored once.
Ty Broughton (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) scored and provided hits in both ends of the doubleheader.
How it Happened – Albright 9, Hood 4
Albright struck first in the top of the second inning, capitalizing on a hit and an error to plate an unearned run. The Lions continued to add pressure in the third, manufacturing two more runs to take a 3–0 lead, despite Hood turning several defensive outs behind starter
Finn Scott-Daniels (Annandale, Va./Annandale).
The game shifted in the fourth as Albright kept churning with a five-run inning. The hosts mixed walks, singles, and a two-run double to extend the advantage to 8–0. Ferreira sparked a 1-2-3 inning in his first inning of relief to soothe the damage.
The bats would awaken with a mix of chaos in the bottom of the fifth,
Amrit Brown (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) singled to start the rally, and walks to
Ty Broughton (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) and
Kamari Chisolm (Gainesville, Va./Bishop O'Connell) created the first tension. A series of wild pitches allowed the Blazers to break the shutout before
Rhett Robbins (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest) reached on a fielder's choice that scored two more runs.
Jason Rivera (Smithsburg, Md./Saint Maria Goretti) followed with a sacrifice fly to cap a four-run inning and cut the deficit to 8–4.
Albright added a final insurance via sacrifice fly, and Hood was unable to generate another comeback chance in its final at-bat as the opener concluded at 9–4.
How it Happened – Albright 4, Hood 3
Hood rebounded quickly in the nightcap, without recording a hit.
Rhett Robbins (Frederica, Del./Lake Forest) reached on an error, moved up on a groundout, and eventually scored when
Jason Rivera (Smithsburg, Md./Saint Maria Goretti) also reached on an error to give Hood a 1–0 lead.
Tim Rio (Manassas, Va./Unity Reed) retired the side in order in the bottom half to preserve the advantage.
Albright would then tie the game in the second on a solo home run, then pulled ahead in the third as a leadoff single and a stolen base set the stage for a run that crossed on a wild pitch. Hood threatened in the third with back-to-back singles and runners on second and third, but the Blazers were unable to cash in as the Lions maintained a 2–1 edge.
Hood had some help with an error by the first baseman to put
AJ Haines (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) on base. Rivera then singled and
Sean Seely (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) delivered an RBI single to even the score.
Ty Broughton (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) followed with another RBI single to left, giving Hood its first lead since the opening inning at 3–2. The Blazers loaded the bases later in the frame, but Albright turned to its bullpen and escaped further damage.
The Lions responded in the bottom of the eighth. A walk and stolen base put the tying run in scoring position before a bunt single drove in the equalizer. Moments later, a sharp single up the middle plated the go-ahead run, flipping the score to 4–3.
Hood put the tying run on base in the ninth on an error, but Albright recorded the final two outs to secure the one-run victory and complete the sweep.
