ALLENTOWN, Pa.- The Hood College women's volleyball team wrapped up their time at the Buttermaker Tournament on Saturday, and unfortunately fell to John Jay 3-1, and Rutgers-Camden 3-0.
Set Scores
John Jay won 21-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-12.
Rutgers-Camden won 25-19, 25-13, 25-18.
Inside the Box Score
Cam Madden (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) led the Blazers across two matches with 23 kills.
Sami Foxie-Fields (Upper Marlboro, Md./South County) had 24 assist on the day.
Janiyah Thornton (Waldorf, Md./Southern Maryland Christian Academy) had five blocks.
Isabelle Garrett (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna) tallied four aces.
Kendall Massey (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo) racked up 11 digs.
How it Happened – John Jay College
The Blazers held the early 4-1 lead after a
Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) service ace. The Bloodhounds responded with five unanswered points to now lead in set one 5-4. John Jay jumped out to a seven-point lead midway through the set as the score was now 14-7. Hood battled their way back into it, after Ricketts would set up teammate
Emerson O'Connor (Woodbridge, Va./Forest Park) for a kill, and John Jay now held a 16-13 lead. Hood went on a late run in set one and now lead 22-20. The Blazers were able to hold on and take set one 25-21.
In set two, the Blazers again jumped out to a quick start and went up 6-1 after a
Mary LeBlanc (Suffolk, Va/Stonebridge) kill. Hood Led 13-7 after a service ace by
Isabelle Garrett (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna). The Blazers went up 17-10, but the Bloodhounds found some rhythm and clawed their way back into it. The score was now 18-17, still in favor of Hood. John Jay went on a late run and was able to win set two 25-21, as the match now set at 1-1.
Neither team in set three was able to pull away as both squads traded points back and forth. Hood led John Jay 13-10 after a kill by
Cam Madden (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) and then another by LeBlanc. Hood went up five, as the score sat at 20-15, but the Bloodhounds found momentum late and rallied in set three to win 25-22.
John Jay jumped to an 10-2 lead. The Blazers stopped the bleeding after a kill by
Janiyah Thornton (Waldorf, Md./Southern Maryland Christian Academy). Despite the deficit the Blazers continued to battle as the score was 18-12. Unfortunately, those would be the last points of the set for the Blazers as the Bloodhounds went on a run and ended with 25-12 victory and won the set 3-1.
How it Happened – Rutgers-Camden University
Two early kills by
Brynn Cochran (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) and
Grace Tamburin (Wheeling, WV./Wheeling Park) helped the Blazers earn some early motivation and lead 3-2. The Scarlet Raptors held a slight advantage as the score was 11-7. The Blazers were able to knot the score up at 15 after a
Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) kill.
Cam Madden (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) gave the Blazers the 16-15 lead after a kill, but the Scarlet Raptors responded and tied it back at 16. As Hood searched for answers offensively, Rutgers-Camden took full advantage and took set one 25-19.
An 8-2 start in set two, had the Blazers finding themselves in an early hole. A
Janiyah Thornton (Waldorf, Md./Southern Maryland Christian Academy) block and a
Sami Foxie-Fields (Upper Marlboro, Md./South County) service ace helped the Blazers cut into the lead, as the score was now 8-4. Later in the set, Hood was down by 10, as Rutgers-Camden led 18-8. The Scarlet Raptors didn't look back and finished Hood off 25-13 as they now were up 2-0 in the match.
The final set featured Hood trying to reverse sweep, and Rutgers-Camden seeking the sweep. Neither of the squads budged, but Hood led 9-7. The Blazers went down 11 to 10 but knotted it back up at 11 after a Betley kill. The Blazers were down 20-15, as they fought to get back into it, but the Scarlet Raptors would seize the moment, and sweep the Blazers 25-18.
