How it Happened

The Blazers found themselves in a 5-0 hole to start set one. Hood battled back into the set and tied it up at 6-6 after a Meara Mason (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) service ace. As the set progressed, the Blazers went up 20-12, as the momentum was fully in favor of the Blazers. The Knights battled back despite the deficit, as the score was now 20-15, still in favor of Hood. A kill by Mary LeBlanc (Suffolk, Va/Stonebridge) and an error by the Knights had the Blazers lead at 22-15. The Blazers were able to sustain the lead despite the Knights efforts, and an Anna Huber (Bel Air, Md./Greater Grace Christian Academy) ace would end the set with a 25-19 win for Hood.

The Blazers came out blazing in set two jumping out to a 7-0 lead, as the Knights took a well needed timeout to try and regroup. Hood's offense was rolling and didn't slow down as they now led 16-6 after Isabelle Garrett (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna) found Cam Madden (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) for a kill.  Later in the set, Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) earned a service ace to now have the Blazers lead at 20-8. Madison Powell (Midlothian, Va./Manchester) helped Hood jump to a 23-9 lead, and Isabelle Garrett (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna) ended set two with a kill as the Blazers would take the win 25-11 and went up 2-0 in the match.

As Hood looked to sweep and Neumann looked to reverse sweep, set three featured neither team able to find the clear advantage as both teams traded points back and forth. The Blazers went up 9-8 after a Kendall Massey (Upper Marlboro, Md./Largo) service ace. Towards the end of the set, The Knights found some momentum and went on a run late to lead 23-15 over the Blazers. Hood had a late run of their own to cut into the lead which now sat at 23-19, but Neumann stayed alive and won set three 25-19.

Neumann applied pressure on Hood and went up 9-3, but a Kill by Maria Ricketts (Adamstown, Md./New Life Christian) helped stopped the bleeding for Hood. The Knights went up 12-5, as they looked to even  up the matches won at two a piece. Neumann went up 14-7, but Hood showed courage and cut into the lead as the score was 14-11. Neither team was budging and a late run by the Blazers had the score at 20-19. Neumann was able to fend off Hood's late attack and won set four 25-20.

Both teams threw their best punches through the first four sets, and as the final set started, it was clear that this was going to be a heavy weight finish. The teams' trade points and Hood earned the advantage with an 8-6 lead before a Neumann timeout. The Knights out of the timeout scored five unanswered points to lead 11-8. The score was 13-9, but a kill by Sami Betley (Bel Air, Md./Mercy) and an error by the Knights had the score at 13-11. After the Betley kill, the Blazers had the energy on their side, but back-to-back kills by the Knights was all Neumann needed to reverse sweep the Blazers to start conference play.
