Women's Soccer Shuts Out Gallaudet for Fourth Straight Win

FREDERICK, Md.--Junior midfielders Liz Foreman and Courtney DeSisto each netted goals to lift the Hood College women's soccer team to its fourth straight victory, a 2-0 shutout over Gallaudet University, Thursday afternoon at Thomas Athletic Field.

The Blazers improve to 8-4-1 with the win while the Bison drop to 2-10-1.

Hood dominated Gallaudet on the offensive end, outshooting the Bison 36-8. Foreman got the Blazers on the board at the 16:45 mark of the first half when she took a cross from freshman forward Nicole Antalffy and beat GU keeper Amelia Palmer to the left side to put Hood up 1-0. The goal was Foreman's second of the season. Gallaudet nearly tied it up three minutes later but a point-blank shot by Katie Romano was saved by freshman keeper Nina Duron.

The Blazers had numerous other scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize and went into the half with the narrow 1-0 lead, despite owning a 21-4 shot advantage.

In the first two minutes of the second half, sophomore defender Liz Rakowski crossed the ball to junior midfielder Kristina Rendon in the box but her shot ricocheted off the crossbar. Later in the period, DeSisto fired a shot to the right side of the goal but Palmer came up with the diving save.

Gallaudet wasted a prime scoring opportunity when a point-blank shot by Nicole Lanning sailed wide.

At the 61:43 mark of the second half, Palmer was whistled for a yellow card which resulted in an indirect kick for Hood. Rendon tapped the ball to senior midfielder Tamara Maggard who fired the ball high and Palmer made a leaping save.

But the Blazers finally managed to tack on an insurance goal at the 66:09 mark. A shot by freshman defender Colleen Cruice was tipped by Palmer then hit off the crossbar and was deflected to DeSisto who cashed in the rebound for her third goal of the season.

Gallaudet senior Justine Peloso had two shots denied by Duron late in the half as the Blazers went on to record their seventh shutout of the season. Duron tallied eight saves in the victory while Palmer collected a whopping 18 stops in the losing cause.

Hood returns to action Saturday when it hosts Lycoming College in a non-conference game at 12 p.m. The Blazers will recognize their two graduating seniors, Tamara Maggard and Vicky Anderson, before the game.
