HILTON HEAD, S.C.--The Hood College women's tennis team kicked off its 2006 season with a 9-0 shutout of NAIA opponent Campbellsville (Ky.) University Sunday.

The Blazers began the day by sweeping the three doubles flights with little trouble.

Sophomores Stephanie Garrett and Laura Wanner blanked Francine Nogueira and Iris Peyton 8-0 at the No. 1 spot.

Freshmen Larisa Buriak and Christine Ocampos-Barry followed with an 8-3 win over Becca Rice and Madeline Kitchens at No. 2, and sophomores Christina Rosa and Nicole DeMambro added an 8-3 victory over Sara Higgason and Megan Keeling at the third flight.

Hood continued to dominate in singles play, picking up five wins in straight sets.

Ocampos-Barry was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Nogueira at the top flight, while Garrett got past Peyton 7-6 (6), 6-1 at the second spot.

Buriak cruised past Rice 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, and Wanner followed with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Kitchens at No. 4.

Rosa outlasted Higgason 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (4) at No. 5, and DeMambro was a 6-2, 5-1 (def.) winner against Keeling at the sixth flight.

The Blazers return to action Monday when they face Mississippi College at 8 a.m.
