FREDERICK, Md.--Senior Annie Lavery scored off an assist from
junior Laurie Burrier with 6:06 remaining to lift Hood to a home
opening 7-6 win over Centenary (N.J.) Tuesday afternoon at Thomas
Athletic Field.
The Blazers (2-1) held a 5-1 lead early in the second half
before the Cyclones (1-6) scored five of the next six goals to tie
the game with just over eight minutes remaining.
Lavery came through in the clutch with her second goal of the
game, taking a Pitts feed from behind the net and beating Lauren
Davis.
Centenary had several chances in the closing minutes but Hood
held on for the victory.
Pitts gave the Blazers an early 1-0 lead when she scored an
unassisted goal just 40 seconds into the game.
The score remained the same for almost 10 minutes until freshman
Liz Rakowski converted a pass from sophomore Christa Lundskow.
Lavery then struck just over two minutes later off an assist
from sophomore Regina Bakely, and Rakowski notched her second goal
of the afternoon with help from Burrier at the 17:05 mark to give
the Blazers 4-0 advantage.
Dana Pizzi put Centenary on the board with an unassisted goal
with just under seven minutes left in the first half as Hood took a
4-1 lead at the break.
Burrier scored her second goal of the day just 1:39 into the
second half before the Cyclones went on their 5-1 run.
Centenary found the net three times in a span of one minute, 52
seconds to forge a tie and set up Lavery's game-winner.
Sophomore Lauren Lieb made six saves for Hood, while Davis
stopped four shots for Centenary.
The Blazers return to action Thursday when they host Wilmington
College at 4 p.m.
