BALTIMORE--Third-seeded Chestnut Hill used a 7-2 scoring run
over 15 minutes of the second half to post a 17-11 upset of No. 2
Hood in the semifinals of the Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference
Tournament Saturday at College of Notre Dame of Maryland's Alumnae
Field.
The Griffins (4-10), who avenged a 16-12 regular-season loss to
the Blazers, advance to the AWCC championship game to play No. 1
seed and host Notre Dame tomorrow at noon. The Gators downed No. 4
Wells 15-2 in Saturday's first semifinal and seek their 11th
straight AWCC title.
Hood (3-10) took a 1-0 lead just 34 seconds into action on the
first of freshman Liz Rakowski's game-high six goals, but it would
be the No. 2 seed's only advantage of the game.
Chestnut Hill scored the next two goals to move in front, and
the game was tied three more times before the Griffins tallied
three straight goals over an eight-minute span to build a 7-4 with
8:42 left in the half.
Laura Pitts brought Hood to within two just 26 seconds later,
and the teams exchanged goals in the closing minutes of the period
as Chestnut Hill took an 8-6 advantage at the break.
The Griffins extended their lead to 9-6 just over five minutes
into the second half before the Blazers pulled to within 9-8 on a
free position goal by Rakowski and an unassisted tally by Burrier.
Chestnut Hill, however, scored seven of the next nine goals to
build an advantage that would not be overcome. Morgan Nichols
scored two of her team-high tying four goals to spark the run.
Donovan and Stephanie Carlyle also tallied four goals for the
Griffins, who outshot the Blazers 22-12 in the second half.
Chestnut Hill also held a 42-23 advantage in ground balls.
Rakowski added a game-high seven ground balls to go along with
her six goals. Burrier had two goals and two assists, while Annie
Lavery had two goals and one assist. Burrier and Lavery tied for
game-high honors with five draw controls each.
Lauren Lieb made 12 saves for Hood. Ashley Pacifico had 10 stops
for Chestnut Hill.
