FREDERICK, Md.--The Hood College men's basketball team rallied
from a 13-point second half deficit to upend the visiting York
College Spartans, 80-78, Saturday in a Capital Athletic Conference
game at Gov. Thomas Johnson High School.
The Blazers (13-3, 6-1) set a school record with their sixth
straight win and remain in first place in the conference, while the
Spartans fall to 10-7, 4-4 in the CAC. The Blazers, who wrapped up
a perfect five-game homestand and are now 7-0 at TJ this year, also
defeated the third team on their schedule which advanced to the
2006 NCAA Tournament (Catholic, Messiah).
The Spartans used a torrid first-half to keep the Blazers at
bay. York nailed 18-of-27 from the floor, including six
three-pointers, en route to a 45-36 halftime advantage. The 45
points are the most scored against the Blazers in the first half
this season.
Hood, which has three come-from-behind victories to date this
season, faced a double-figure hole with 16:27 to play, just the
second time all year that the Blazers have trailed by double
figures. The Blazers gradually chipped away at the Spartan lead.
Junior Jesse Gutekunst scored seven straight points over a span of
2:20 to draw the Blazers to within four with 7:04 remaining.
Then, sophomore Ryan Junghans, Hood's hottest long-range
shooter, drilled his first triple of the game from the right wing
at the 6:26 mark to pull the Blazers to within two. Following a
York timeout, Junghans picked Brad Zefring's pocket and senior Sean
Robine buried a trey from the left side off a pass from sophomore
Tim Abercrombie to give the Blazers their first lead of the game
with 6:15 remaining. That lead was short-lived as the Spartans
countered at the other end on a three-pointer by Joe Yeck.
The contest remained a one-possession affair until Abercrombie
dished to Robine who got a 15-footer to go to put the Blazers up
five, 78-73, with 1:41 to play. After a Nick Brady three-pointer
cut it to two, the Spartans fouled senior Darnell Edmonds who went
to the line for a one-and-one try. Edmonds, who came into the game
with a sub-par 38.5 free-throw percentage on the season, calmly
nailed both foul shots to regain a four-point edge for Hood.
York's go-to player, Chad McGowan, banked in a layup with 53
seconds to go to make it 80-78. The Blazers burned virtually the
entire shot clock on their next possession but Abercrombie's
attempt rimmed out and Pat Kelley came down with the defensive
carom. The Spartans called their last timeout to set up a potential
game-winner. Zefring drove to hoop with four seconds remaining but
missed the layup. The rebound was corralled by Brady, whose
second-chance shot in traffic was also off the mark, and Gutekunst
grabbed the board to clinch the Hood victory.
Gutekunst finished with a team-high 25 points and 14 rebounds
for his 24th double-double of his career. Junghans tallied 23
points, including 7-of-7 from the foul line, while Robine totaled
15 points and four steals. Edmonds chipped in eight points, six
assists and five rebounds, while Abercrombie had seven points,
seven boards and four assists.
The Blazers outrebounded the Spartans, 42-29, including 18-5 on
the offensive glass.
McGowan led all scorers with 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting as
four of York's five starters reached double figures.
The Blazers embark on their first roadtrip since Dec. 30 Tuesday
when they travel to Salisbury University for a 7:30 p.m. CAC tilt.
