CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.--The Hood College women's basketball team used
a solid second half effort to upend the Wilson College Phoenix,
64-45, in an Atlantic Women's Colleges Conference game Monday
evening at Nelson Gymnasium.
The Blazers, winners of two of their last three, improve to 3-14
overall and 2-3 in the AWCC and won their 13th straight over Wilson
dating back to 2001. Meanwhile, the Phoenix dropped their eighth
straight game and fall to 2-14, 0-5 AWCC.
After a tightly-contested first half which saw neither team lead
by more than four points, a free throw by Wilsonýs Jennifer
Liggett gave the hosts a slim 25-23 lead at the break.
But in the second half, the Blazers found their stroke and used
a total team effort from all nine players. Trailing 32-30 at the
11:57 mark, Hood ripped off seven consecutive field goals by six
different players to take a 47-32 lead with 7:40 remaining. The
Blazers kept Wilson at bay the rest of the way, never letting the
Phoenix get closer than 10.
Freshman Jennifer Willison led all scorers with 20 points and 14
rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
All nine Blazers got into the scoring column for the first time
this season. Sophomore Sara Wastler tallied nine points and seven
rebounds, while classmate Whitney Schultheis tallied seven points
and four rebounds.
Senior Tamara Maggard and freshman Brianna Raithel each drained
a pair of three-pointers for six points, while senior Dana Shook
and freshman Jessica Nease chipped in five points apiece.
Freshman Sara Hartlaub had four points and four boards and
freshman Christi Valdez hit 1-of-3 from the floor for two points.
The Blazers outrebounded the Phoenix, 45-35, including 17-6 on
the offensive glass. Hood picked off a season-high 13 steals and
turned the ball over a season-low 16 times. In addition, the
Blazers held Wilson just 45 points, the fewest Hood has surrendered
this season.
Hood looks to make it a season sweep over AWCC foe Mary Baldwin
College in an AWCC game in Staunton, Va. Tip is slated for 6 p.m.
